I had to put an oil filter wrench on along with a 4 foot piece of pvc to get some good torque on it! pain in the @$$ it was to change that. Owell, she loves her new fluids

I just hand tighten my oil filter. Once I can't turn it anymore it's tight. Same thing with the oil drain plug. Just turn it until it's snug, I never bother to torque it.

Hand tighten it or with a wrench?

Personally I hand tighten it as far as I can go then use the filter wrench to add 1/8 of a turn. This gives good gasket compression for a solid seal to the machined oil filter adapter surface.

twist on until the filter won't turn with just finger compression

then twist on about 1/2 turn more using wrench or hand

make sure to pretreat the rubber gasket with a thin layer of oil and to clean the seating surface on the engine off

Just hand tighten as far as I can get it. Never had a problem in the 63k I've owned the truck. And strangely enough it always tightens up between oil changes because I always have to use an oil filter wrench to get it off.

Oil Filter issue

I have a 95 F150 with 5.8L. This is my first oil change on the truck since I have had it and the previous owner must haver really torqued it down. I have a filter wrench on it and as I was turning it I noticed the filter is not loosening, but whatever the filter attaches to is turning. I am not too much of a Mechanic but I know some.
It has a couple (looks like) coolant hoses attaching to it. It appears it broke lose. I am not concerned about getting the filter lose I will be able to get it with some channel locks, but am I causing any other issues with what is turning?

Angry

After ****ing around for an hour, I bought one of those filter wrenches like "1badstx" posted, then I took off my air intake snorkel, stood on a step stool, cause my truck was jacked up, and from the top worked that wrench on and pulled like all get out, mind you I am 6'1" and 335lbs and it was TIGHT and the genius engineer that configured the filter placement needs to have a motorcraft fl820s and the famous TPMS stuff (same guy I bet!) shoved up his **** for the most pi33 poor design of all time, period.

Whenever I put mine on I just tighten it by hand until I can't turn it anymore. Everytime I go to take it off though I always have to use a wrench.
