Are the backsides of OEM wheels clearcoated?

I have the standard 2005 XLT wheels (17", NOT chrome clad) on my truck. This weekend, I had the rear wheels off the truck, and I attempted to clean them up. Even after several washings/scrubbings, there are still black dots all over. I assume it's hardened brake dust. I'm wondering if that part (the backside) is also clear-coated or not..??.. If not, then I want to take some mild steelwool to them to see if it helps out. But if they are clearcoated, then steelwool is definately a no-no.

You have the same wheels as me 17" XLT! I like them much better than the other wheels that are Claded with anything plastic resembling Chrome! When I had one of the wheels off I looked at the back & I think it is safe to assume that they are not clearcoated there!............I like these rims alot & clean them once a week!...........

Just looked at your gallery, and yup we have the same wheels. I agree they are much nicer than the faux chrome OEM wheels.

I guess I'll take some steelwool to them. I already soaked them with Pro Wheelie Clean, which is some pretty potent stuff. Didn't do alot of good though. They're still spotted pretty badly.
