The 8.8 is a fine axle with tires up to about 35s. Anything bigger I would consider upgrading. I guess the 9.75 would be the upgrade in these trucks. Everyone used to say that the 9 inch was so much better for the pre-97 trucks, but that really makes no sense. I would guess that the 9.75 is to the 04-08s like the 10.25 is to the pre-97s as far as upgrading goes.

Good info on the carrier break though. Once again, good excuse for Limited Slip.

Want me to show ya some 8.8's with 40"+ tires going over crazy *** rocks ??? Doing stuff I would never put my truck through ?

Its a very popular axle for Jeep guys. Also very popular with the rock buggies. These axles can be made pretty darn stout.

For towing and hauling, it sure would be nice to have the 9.75 tho...

The 8.8" is a great unit. It's actually a lot less power hungry compared to the the 9.75" and 10.25" ...

Dont be fooled, those little 8.8's are some tough units! On top of that they can be built up, and almost bullit proof. (ALMOST) My mustang has a 8.8 and it's holding up fine, Im fairly certain it's putting more hp/trq than my truck.

Ohh an my trucks an 04 w/ 8.8 and aburn w/ 4.30's. I have beat the hell out of it also, and it's holding up fine.

Shop around on the master install kit's, the range in prices from place to place. I WOULD do a master install kit, esp. since you are saving on the install. Your going into the rear, might as well do it all while your there!

Don't get me wrong. The 8.8 is a great swap for the Jeeps. But think about what they are comming from. Dana 35 to Ford 8.8 is a big improvement.

For the trucks that have always come with the 8.8 stock (pre-97), it makes more sense to just swap a 10.25 in than throw thousands at a 8.8.

don't knock the 8.8

all of my 88-96 model F-150's had it and I had 0 issues with them (8 total). You can make a very strong 8.8 for cheap...not thousands

if a 9.75 will bolt in without mods, then that obviously is the way to go

Once again, I am not knocking the 8.8. I am just saying that no matter how much you throw at it, it wont be as strong as the 10.25. Simple fact.
