Those with 4.10s.....

Are you guys happy with them? Was there there a good change in acceleration? I know a few of you were having issues with whine, were those problems ever resolved? What tuners or whatever did you use to update the speedo for the gears? Since the axle size is different on some variations, think that could be why some have whine and others dont? Also, what kind of mpg are you guys getting? I have a 4.6 with the oem 20s and its miserable, and am getting around 11-12 in the city....

stinxx like warm chit...

I have the factory 4:10's and I have yet to surpass 10.63 miles per gallon. The up side the truck feels twice as stout as my 2004 did with 3:73's.

Really? I'm getting 14.3 in my FX4 with the 4.10. About to go up to 33's....

I had 3.55's in my F150. It was ok... but it didn't cut the mustard.

Installed 4.10s... wow... night and day difference especially when towing.

I've had two different sets of 4.10's installed from two different places that install gears all the time. They both whine about the same speeds, the second set whines slightly less at higher speeds. Drives me crazy so I try to avoid those speeds but the acceleration was a big improvement.

Gears - Precision and now Ford Racing. They are really the same thing though.

I usually average somewhere in the 14's mpg with the oem 20's.

I've heard 4.10's whine for some reason whereas other ratios are less prone to whine.

Same here. Had 3.55's in my '04 F150, 4x4. Regeared to 4.10 about a year ago (had to regear front and rear being a 4wd). Huge difference in towing ability. Occasionally tow a 6800lb travel trailer. Weighs probably 7500lbs or so when loaded.

Mileage? Lost about 1-2 mpg. In the city, I get 14-15 mpg. I normally keep it at about 75mph on the highway, getting about 15-16mpg. Went out of state last week, kept it at 68mph for a 250 mile road trip. Averaged 18.1 mpg. My tires are Yokahama Geolanders, P265/70R17.

Rear end noise/whining? When under warranty, had several dealer repairs done. Noise always returned. After re-gearing, rear end whining went completely away.....for a little while. After about 4000-5000 miles, it returned just like before. Only whines between about 35 and 48 mph. It is annoying but I've learned to live with it. Hit 90,000 on the odometer today!

i have oem 20's on my screw and 3.55 gears. i didn't think they are that bad at all. but yet, i am coming from a sport trac. i run a gryphon tuner and the different in performance, is wow. prolly more of a gain than just swapping gears. i do however might have to change gears for when i get more involved towing my mustang around to races and etc.

i prolly want a lil more gear than 3.73 but don't want the 4.10, i might look for a company that offers a 3.89/3.91ish area. if not, i will opt for a oem 3.73 not ot have any whine!

oh by the way, for when i do drive in city city city driving (i drive alot of back road non stop driving usually, and city city city is alot of stop and go) i usually get 11mpg without a tuner. don't know with it though.

I know you asked about 4.10 but I put Yukon 4.56 and have no whine, at least that I can tell, not any louder than the BFG all terrain tires. The offline launch and pull from 0-80 makes it worth it and I would do it again, unless I bought a truck with a set of ***** right out of the factory. Gas mileage, don't care, wouldn't drive a truck if I did plus I cruise at about 60-65 on highways and do about a 50/50 mix of back woods/highway driving. The gears, paired with custom tune and efans, give truck a great off line launch. 33" tires will spin no problem. Makes you really like driving your truck...

If I ever get some extra money I'm considering changing once again to another ratio, maybe like 4.30 or something. By then I will have spent in excess of $2k changing gears around on a 2wd. Can we say, waste of money?

I am having a set of motive gear 4.30's installed today was going to go with 4.56 with my 32 tires but thought it may be to steep for daily driving and I figured 4.10's would maybe not be enough so I split the difference.

I cant wait the truck runs great as is but really need a little bit more quickness out of it, something the 3.55's just dont do.

Hmmmm.... 4.10's, I am dropping my truck off on Monday for the 3rd time so they can go back in and redo the 4.10's. First set was Genuine, and they sang at 68-80 not under acceleration, but when maintaining the speed. Drive you freaking crazy!!

Upgraded to the Yukon's, and have the exact same issue, except this time it picks up at 70mph, and whines it azz off even when holding the speed or under acceleration.

Im not happy with the 4.10's, as I have a (4.6) and im thinking of maybe jumping to 4.30's.... my truck didnt gain a lot off the start, and it lost some pull after about 50mph. It's either to tall, for the trucks trq curve, or not enough with these 31's and American Racing Rims. (Think they are heavier than the stock ones) with the same tire.

I used the Custom Tune's from VMP, and an Xcal2 to adjust the gears, and tires.

ps: Im thinking about dropping back down the the 3.73's to avoid the 4.10 whine!! I have heard that 4.10's are prone to noise, but at the same time I have also heard that a proper install and you should have no noise. I'd skip the 4.10's if I could start all over.
