Both rear axle seals out - along with rear brakes? what gives?

Took my truck in to have the rear brakes (pads and rotors) changed and it turns out that the both rear axle seals are leaking and they said this is what caused the problems?

(ebrake shoes need replaced too, but that is my own stupid fault for driving with it on like an idiot one day Im sure)

I'm novice to all of this... so..... is this a result of something I'd doing when driving or is it just 'one of those things' that the seals go out like that?

I think it's just junk seals. I had to replace axle seals and bearings in my truck at 50K-something miles. My dad's '97, in 197K+ miles, I haven't done anything to the axle except a pinion seal. They ain't building them like they used to.

Thats crap.

Oh well, hopefully these will last longer.

I never had to change them in my Ranger at over 200k miles, so I was surprised.
