I think he meant physical damage to the joint itself, if it just started leaking then your joint is probably fine and you just need a new boot. But if it has been leaking for a while, you may not have any grease left and the joint could be bad inside.

well I dont plan on using the four wheel drive until I get it fixed next week. I am going on a 500 mile strip this weekend too.

I would at least seal up the hole before driving too much. You want to keep dirt out of there until you get it repaired.
