Need trans help/ideas asap please!

Just this morning the trans on my 04 screw 4x4 with 5.4 started slipping in OD badly. I'm so pissed because I have 81K on the truck now and the premium extended warranty ran out at 75K. I happened to be near my dealer when this happened so I pulled in. We went for a ride and my advisor found that the slip was in 4th.....if the OD was turned off it was fine. The slip is like putting the truck in neutral underway.

Unless you have other ideas I see two options. Have Ford fix whatever is wrong and get a 12 month/12K mile warranty ON WHAT THEY FIXED ONLY or have them put an entire GPD (Ford remanufactured) trans in and get a 36 month/100K warranty on the whole trans. I am waiting for the estimated cost on the GPD trans but of course they have no way to estimate the cost on the repair only without tearing it down.

Antbody else have this problem? Have any guidance, thoughts or ideas? I am a Ford only guy but I always get the Ford extended warranty and always sell the truck before it runs out......since I was still ok with this truck I guess I will pay for not following my rule this time......

I will have to make a decision and drop the truck off in a few hours. Thanks in advance for your help.

Does the "slip" feel like going into neutral and then immediately back into gear? I don't know if this is the same problem that you are experiencing or not but I had a similar problem a few months back with my 2004 FX4 (210,000 mi though). I thought that the transmission was slipping because I was feeling a hard slip when in O.D. and the engine was under load. When I took the truck out of O.D. it was fine. After several visits to the dealer and being told it was to transmission or torque converter but not being able to pinpoint an exact cause, one tech took my truck for a drive with his diagonostic equipment hooked to the truck. He found out it was a short in one of the coil-over ignition modules causing a misfire which felt like an instantenous slip in the tranny. This is a shot in the dark but I thought I would finally post, after a few years of lurking, and maybe help out with an experience.

I had the same offer from ford however my problem was no reverse.

I have the tranny on my garrage floor right now and am looking at rebuilding it with level ten parts. www.levelten.com

Thanks for your thoughts. This isn't the same as mine.....when I hit about 40 or so in OD the trans seems to go into neutral and stays there until I push the lockout or stop and start again. My Dealer thinks this is some kind of broken snap ring which can be fixed without removing the trans for +/- $500. If all goes well I'll get it back today.

I wish I had the time and space to work on my own trans like that. Since this is my daily driver I need it back asap. I never heard about Level Ten before. Thanks for the info.

PS - whose susp kit is on your truck or is it hand-fabbed? Since I don't have a hankering for a new truck yet I thought I may keep this truck for a few more years and sell it to my son when he hits 16. I thought about a J.D. or a Camburg kit with some Deaver rears but I don't want to change the fenders. Looks like you romp yours pretty good but I have a 5 car for that. How does it work?

I had the same problem at 76k. Dealer said that od band had burned up, and that there were broken teath in the case. Said that I must have been towing alot with the OD off. They gave me the option of replacing just the parts, or a new rebuilt tranny. I ended up getting the gpd at approx $3300. hope you have better luck than I did.

Just get the tranny rebuilt. Much cheaper than a new one. Thats what I did when the *** hats that stole my truck made my clutches shiny and stripped 1st gear.

These trannys seem to be pretty weak. Mine went at 72k (this was when my truck was basically bone stock too). 3rd gear and OD bands completely destroyed. Got the new one for 2800 and a 75k mile warranty.

I towed about 4500 lbs this weekend, I have a gryphon so I was monitoring what gear I was in, when the converter was locked and tranny temp. When I had o/d on the tranny would heat up to 180 degrees and the thing would not lock the converter in 3rd when climbing. When I had o/d off, it stayed at about 155, and the converter locked...I turned overdrive off every time i had to climb and allowed it to kick into o/d when i was not climbing.
