Update The Classifieds!!

I know this is probably not the correct place to post this, but considering the amount of exposure, it seems reasonable. Check out the classifieds on this VW site I used to use. It is much more user friendly and navigation is a breeze. Our classifieds here flat out suck! It is nice to be able to browse and find exactly what you are looking for. Just a suggestion.

I agree. I usually don't even bother with them too much because it is such a pain to find anything on them.

I know that I am not one of the most seasoned users here, but have had extensive experience on other forums. How do we set sometihng like this into motion, oir is it just a lost cause? Is this forum set up this way due to the program they are used to create it, or did someone think that this was the best way to present the classifieds? Just trying to understand the logic behind it. This forum is here for us, so I would think we had some say in the presentation of these things.

I dont know much about "creating" a forum either, but I do not like the classified section here either. I am a member of this site and it uses the same buttons that we do so I am kinda guessing it is bassed of the same software. Anyway, they dont have a classified section, but rather a sub forum for you to post stuff for sale or trade. Its a lot easier to search through because you just search through the Swap and Sell section for what you want. It also allows people to sell items that dont bump there post to the top because most poeple are searching anyway.

Although this the wrong section I agree too. This one is a little easier to navigate http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/ about half way down they have a sales department for sponsers and general classifieds. They also have a trader feed back rating that shows up on every post you make to deter people from screwing others in the classifieds.

There is a Web Development sub forum so you can post your suggestions to the webmaster in there. Someone notify steve so he doesn't miss this thread.

I hate vwvortex. I traded in a pair of GLI's on my truck and those guys over there are asses. You can't hardly ask a question without people flaming on you and calling you an idiot. Sorry for the rant.

You guys here are more in tune with how these types of communities are suppose to operate. I like it here much better.

Sorry, I think I will contribute something useful rather than just a rant.

I have actually created some of these types of sites. www.2gss.org is one and the other two are private to Homeowners Associations. Yes, most of the time it is a restriction of the software. This boards language is PHP, also known as the hackers language. PHP is a very weak language but its also open source code. It requires no server side or CGI scripting. That is why most of these communities are using it.

The classifieds is probably a plug in or add on feature to this software and either has not been updated/upgraded or its all there is available. It could also be that the owner of the board is mostly WYSIWYG literate and not really into PHP programming. This is very common. Not knocking the Admin team here or anything like that but I have seen alot of these types of boards and I know how they run. They are pretty much just a graphical user inteface and they just ask you questions and you answer them, not alot of programming knowledge needed.

Anyway, writing a custom page for the classifieds would be fairly labor intensive to one with a full time job and managing this board. However, I can see several alternatives to the current Classified setup.

Even just a sticky with some posting guidelines/formats would be a big help.

Like vehicle for sale post must have year, make, model, price and location in title.

that's simple enough right?

I agree.

Here is my suggestion. Set it up like FullSizeBronco's classified section. I feel that is the best setup classified section i have seen. I have been on numerous forums. ATV, CB Radios, Trucks, Cars, Photoshop, Photography.

I wish I could say it is that easy but this board is vBulleting and the Bronco board is FSB. Same programming language but different setups. A custom page would be time consuming but probably not to difficult considering that it could be useful for years to come. But it is not up to me. LOL.

Well Blue, the only thing different on the Bronco forum is the State Prefixes. Other wise its just guidelines you must follow inside the post.

I was referring to making a custom page with drop down menus and such. Something custom for the boards needs.
