Tailgate Locks

Does anyone here have any opinion/ experience with the various electronic tailgate locks for a 2004-2008 F-150? Looking to install one on my 2008.

You can do it for under $10. I am not taking credit for this, just know where to find it!

I did it for about $10 and a cpl hrs time. Just buy an actuator off of e bay, get some wiring and run it from the passenger side door lock wiring, thru the frame to the tailgate, I bought some quick disconnects so when I take the tailgate off I can also disconnect the wiring. pics in gallery.

If you dont want to mess around with fabbing up a bracket. I used the PowerGate™ , the electric tailgate lock from Pace Edwards. Comes with a bracket that bolts right into the tailgate handle. I love mine works great. Its a little more expensive than just the actuators. But a lot easier to install. And no tie wraps to hold it on!

what is the price on that? looks like you are pretty much just buying the bracket. i ordered an actuator on ebay and paid $5 for one, but the guy sent me 2. i am giving the other to my friend to install in his 08 f250..

Its about $60 if I remember right. You get the actuator, mecanical linkage to fit right into the Ford lock mechanism, wiring, and bracket.

There was one where it was wireless and it was battery operated actuator. It had a remote and you still maintained the factory key. I think I saw it in JCWhitney at one time, but I am unsure.

This way there is no wiring involved.

I have done 3 of these and they were all different. If you decide to go the actuator route, just take your time and fab what it will take to make it work. The worst part is running the wire along the frame. Be sure to split loom and zip tie the wire up out of moving or hot parts.

I have decided to go with the Pace- Edwards unit. When I went to their web site, it became apparent that it was the same unit I had installed on my '99 F-250 SD about 7 years ago. I think it took under an hour to install. Thanks for the replies guys.

I would be interested to know how the pace edwards ones work. From the information I gathered it did not work like the mod listed at the top of this post (through the key mechanism) They are for all trucks and therfore they mount sideways and just kind of jam one of the rods going from the handle to the latch. This was not what I wanted since there is the key mechanism right there. Someone please let me know if my interpretation of this is wrong.

It actually integrates right into the key lock mechnism. It moves the same lever that the key lock normally does. The key lock still works. Plus it locks everytime you lock your doors. Very good design in my opinion.
