08 camera update

well ppl have been asking for the latest on my camera project so i thought i would let everyone know where i am on it.

i have the camera, handle, tailgate harness, and new 8 pin connector in. i am waiting for my tax return to order the new mirror and mirror harness.

for those who have the oem camera, can you tell me how the camera mounts to the handle? it has two plastic post that the camera slide over, but no way to secure it to the handle. something must slide over the post to secure it but it didnt come with the handle or camera.

my plans are to install the handle, camera, and tailgate harness. i will cut the oem 6pin connector on the end of the tailgate harness due to not having the mate end of it. i will create a new harness that goes from the tailgate harness to the required wires in the main harness. i am using an 8pin connector so i can also install a power lock actuator for the tailgate so i only have one connector if i want to take the tailgate off.

as for the mirror and mirror harness, they will both be straight plug in and i will be good to go.

when i get the last pieces in, i will do my best to do a how to so pre 08 can install it also.......so only time will tell

Could you list the part numbers for everything that you need to complete this?

I was also thinking of adding a rear camera, not sure if I want factory or after market

Thanks
Josh

8L3Z-19G490-A CAMERA $216.70
8L3Z-9943400-AC HANDLE $61.56
8L3Z-14A411-A TAILGATE HARNESS $20.89

that is all i have with me at work. the mirror and mirror harness part numbers are at home and i will get those later for you. that handle is the plain jane black handle. i know the mirror runs $520 and the harness is about $36. so you are looking about $856 plus shipping. all prices are from tascaparts.com...

I assume you have seen the OEM handle with the camera in it? Im not sure what you mean by "how the camera mounts to the handle". The camera is one piece with the handle, no mounting visible. I guess someone would need to take it apart to answer your question. I have the camera if you need some pics of the handle, but Im not taking it apart!

no all i need is the panel on the tailgate taken off and a pic of the back of the handle and camera. i am thinking it takes a stop washer. that is a washer with the teeth on the inside that grabs the plastic post as you slide it over the post. but yea....you dont need to take the camera apart, just the panel on the tailgate for a pic of the back of the handle. but i do understand if you dont want to take that panel off....but thanks for the try!!!!

i can get a pic tomorrow, but from the camera you have a video -, video +, ground, shield, and power. that is all, 5 total wires. ford has a 6 pin plug there, but i am switching it to a 8 pin so i can wire my lock in the same connector.....

Where do you find these 6/8 pin plugs? I am looking for one so I can wire my power tailgate lock/unlatch and prewire for a backup camera if I ever get one. I am looking for a waterproof 8 or so pin male and female connector. Thanks!!

ok, please dont hate me, but due to the threat of rain and the presistant "are you done yet" from the wife, i didnt get any install pics of the camera, handle, and rear harness. but it is in. now i am just waiting for the mirror and mirror harness to come in and i will be set. while i was in the tailgate, i did install the power lock and it is completely functional!!!!

So you spent $50 on pigtails? Should I just visit the junk yard and find something there?
