I could fill up my truck, drive down to the store, come back, fill up again,
and lay the numbers in front of you that I'm getting 37 mpg.
There is evaporation but, the vapor is trapped.
When you take off the gas cap it makes that hissing sound, even at half a tank.
Now, if you tell me that when you remove the cap it makes a
hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssiing sound,
then I'll believe you pick up 1 mpg at the half tank fill.

Don't try to play that now.
I know you're gonna be down there filling up at the half tank.
and you'll have the pump nozzle on the slowest feed slot, just like in the e-mail
you don't plan on gettin' caught by those waiting in line because you're just buying half a tank.
But one of these days, after some redneck who has waited behind you for 20 minutes, gets to the pump and sees you only bought 9 gallons,
he's gonna hunt you down.

Nope, I have been filling up at less than a quarter tank, even though I knew I was wasting gas! I'm not about to irritate the rednecks.

Not sure about filling up at a half tank...
I think you'd waste more fuel driving into, waiting, and driving away from the pumps more often - not to mention the extra wear on your starter, engine, etc.
Also remember that if you fill up on empty, that means you have been driving around with a small amount of fuel in the tank. 5 gallons in the tank is a lot lighter than 50 gallons in the tank. Lighter = better fuel economy. Just a thought...

I run my tank completely dry since gas stations are every two or three miles around here.
I always add the couple of miles I push the truck into my mpg computation.
Plus since I started doing this I was able to cancel my gym membership.
I'm planning on starting a chain e-mail about all these benefits.

I always fill up at completely empty. I'm a starving college student and money in my pocket is happier than money not in my pocket.
I usually don't top off though. Maybe out of laziness, maybe because I ran outta money. I think it's cause I'd rather see 65.78 on the receipt than 66.00.

I have a (different)question..
what about waiting to empty the tank to then go to the gas station?
I have heard that the residues and stuff on the gas will damage something(gas pump?).
Isn't that a myth already?
I mean, didn't the technology take care of it?
The screensavers on our computers were created in order for the (old)monitors not to burn or "stain" because of the perpetual data on screen.
Now thanks to technology the monitors do not suffer that problem but yet there are screensavers, I know, for other reasons than protecting the monitors but still.
So, what could be harmed if we wait till the "Low Gas" turns on, and even driving more?

when i took my lightning, my mechanic told me to put bp or a good "brand" of gas in the truck, not to use el cheapo gas and he also told me not to wait till the truck is completely empty because that would heat up the pump which will cause it to fail and i had my truck on the dyno. didnt want the engine to grenade.
i would have believed the daily soil temperature fluctation below 1m deep to be of insignificant effect, but that's not to say i haven't heard the idea before...the soil temp delta at 1m deep between a location under grass versus a location under unshaded concrete topping is actually quite surprising
at any rate, i let it click off as i see no reason to top off--but i am in the habit of keeping at least 1/2 tank in all my vehicles
