Another Tonneau Thread

I am getting to take an 8 hour road and I would like to be able to secure my cargo.

I have narrowed it down to 3 distinctly different types of covers.

1) Lazer Lite aluminum cover $845+SH http://www.lazerlitecovers.com/
Pro: Attractive, assumed weather tight
Con: Cost and need to remove for big items

2) Pace Edwards Jackrabbit $600 http://www.pace-edwards.com/jackrabbit.asp
Pro: Attractive, flexible, cost, no shipping
Con: Bed space consumed, weathertight, drain tubes

3) Peragon Retractable Aluminum $700www.peragon.com
Pro: Attracive, Flexible, least bed space consumed for retractable, mid range cost
Con: weather tight?, cost, does it open as easily and consistenly as in the videos.
Seems hard to believe that the forward panel would pop in place flush without intervention.

All 3 of these meet my apperance requirements and similar cargo security features. I dont often haul items that are above the bed, but I can see it happening when I didnt plan on it and having the lazer cover hold me back from doing something. I can budget for any of the covers, but the more value, the better, I like bang for my buck.

Anyone had the peragon for a long time period? How does it do in the rain (driving and parked)? I dont do snow, but torrential rain is common for the gulf coast area. I think I can live with my items such as suitcases in the center of the bed and I intend to seal my tailgate as much as possible. Its good timing because peragon has free shipping and a $200 instant rebate.

Feedback based on real world experience would be appreciated. Other suggestions appreciated as well.

Frank

I read your posts in that thread several times. The guy at work has the rollbak. Its more expensive than the jackrabbit. He likes it even though the weather strip towards the cab has come loose. He's had it about 1 year and he says it seals good. The install that he did has caused the plastic railing caps to bow outward a little here and there. As you said gayloads are very expensive.

Why are you considering the rollbak over the jackrabbit?

I have heard through searches on google that the Peragon covers tend to leak alot, and they need to have about 6-8" of cargo clearence for the cover to close.

To be honest, hadnt really considered the jackrabbit much...Id heard of it, and should probably look more into it. Lately ive been leaning twords the bakflip just for the ease of removal and storage in an apt. I like to be able to access the whole bed quickly, that is probably why having a toolbox back there didnt work out.. my requirements where lowprofile or not visible at all, clean looking, easily removable/storable, and lockable...weather tight wasnt really a factor..I just really dont want to see it...

I bought an Extang that lifts up. I went cheap, and sometimes wished that I had a hard top. The Extang ran about 325. It is weather proof, no leaking. The one on my last truck lasted 5 years. I like the new one, in that it lifts, or I could roll up the tonneau, if I was unable to take it off completely. It is supposedly a two man job. I have taken it off and on by myself. With all that said, I like it for the money. If I had more, I would have gotten the roll ups like you are looking at.

I was just at a local shop asking about the Paragon's.The owner of the shop told me that they had purchased a lot of like 75 of them and ended up throwing away (in the garbage) 15 of them. And replace 5 of them from unsatisfied customers.

The only thing that I dont like about what I see about the bakflip is the fact that it blocks the rear window view 100% when up. I am concerned about the peragon there is quite a bit of negative feedback on the cover.

How much to your door?

Weathertight?

Still glides as advertised?

I've got the lack rabbit and the only problems have been the weatherstrip on the rollup box disinagrated(replaced it with some sticky back foam) and it does let water in at the tailgate seal when it sits during heavy rain.

true - but my thought is that if i need it all the way open it's because i'll have something large in the back that will probably be blocking my view out of my rear view mirror anyway.
