Unhappy Few issues w/ the 04 F150

Well, its been a lil while since ive posted last.

Anways, I've been noticing a few issues w/ my baby.

First off, my rearend is clunking and I THINK its coming from the rearend but inlighten me if you think or know is something else cuz thats where i think the sound is coming from. It makes the sound when im slowing down and making a turn/parking. It also does it when taking turns and then hitting the accelarator.

Second, and again I THINK its coming from the front driverside wheel. Its making a noise that its really hard to explain and the best way to describe it is. You know how in movies they over dramatictize (sp) sounds? Well the sound, sounds like someone is taking a rubber band and twisting/whining it up lol. Its the best way I can desribe the noice. The noice is very quite and can only be heard when the radio if off. It happens when accelerating.

Third, the front differential whines in hway speeds when 4WD is engaged. Yes, I know they all do but it became noticable recently. I've also recetnly replaced the front differential fluid and the whine is still there.

Fourth, the truck is making a very high pitched whine when its fairly cold (negative/single/Barraly over double digits weather) It happes on hway speeds and it sounds like its coming from the vent area. Note, this noise isnt the same as the front differentail whine.

Fifth, the truck makes a screatching noise from the the bed area. Happens when going over bumps and stuff. I can only hear it when I have my back sliding window open or standing outside and someone else is driving it.

Sixth, it seems like my truck doesnt have much power/tq. Even on the slightest slant/hill the truck wont move unlike on some cars. You can sit on a slant/hill and let off the brake and it will roll forward by itself. But my truck doesnt do so, I have to give it gas. I uderstand its a truck and its heavy but I just wanted to see if other people experiance this problem.

Well, I think that is all for now or I hope lol. So if you know or have any advice on some or all the problems/issues please let me know. Thanks in advance and sorry for the incredibly long post.

1. high mileage? maybe your clutch pack in diff or a u-joint
2. ???
3. why on the highway in 4x4? and at highway speed?
4. ???
5. check your bed bolts, and check your tailgate. it only takes a little bit of rubbage to make that noise. my last F-150 was really bad about the tailgate squealing over bumps
6. my truck won't idle up the slightest hill either...and mine is a Screw

btw, you have a very pretty truck

I'm no expert, but here's my opinion...

That sounds like a bad U-Joint on your driveshaft. It can bind on acceleration/deceleration, turns, and bumps.

The noise could be coming from a binding axle boot.

Check the axles as in your second question. Whining can occur if one halfaxle is binding, or if the truck is really out of alignment.

There's another discussion on this one in a different thread:

I haven't seen or heard of an F-150 that didn't do this at least once in a while. Mine did it after the spray in bedliner was put in. The bolts needed tightened.

If you removed the cats, that could explain things. Unless you are S/C, I would think removing the CATS would affect the tune and the low end torque.

Its has around 54K right now. So I dont think its that high. For using 4X4 on the highway is, I live in kansas and sometimes the roads arent all that great including the highway.

Thanks for the help and compliment. Just wating for the 24's and some other lil things and it'll look even better.

Printing all that off and taking it to the dealership. Good thing I got a extended bumper to bumper warranty. As far as the CATS go, it did it even w/ all 4 CATS. So i dunno.

Thanks for the help as well.

I still wouldn't recommend it. I used to drive from Wa state to Texas and back every winter (6 years)...I know what you mean about the roads out there (from Denver to the I-35S exit), but I was always in 4x2 unless on an incline. I can count on 1 hand the # of times I needed 4x4 in the ~12 times I drove through there

I think RoushF150 hit the nail on the head for that weird front-end noise. I didn't even think of a worn boot

Yeah that can be really annoying. I have the same problem over bumpy roads. I located my screeching noise at the striker bolts for the tailgate. Ford already put these plastic sleeves around the striker bolts, but I added some grease underneath the sleeves with a greasing needle, and the noise went away. If this is the case for your truck, it's minor annoyance because I just had to clean off the old grease and re-grease it but I find myself doing that once a year. Let us know if it helps you out.

I got rid of the clunk when turning problem I had by tightening the shackle bolts on the rear leaf springs. Just don't tighten them too much or it will bind.

I remember reading on here a while back about using 4x4 on pavement. Something about your differential being locked when you go into 4x4. So even if in 4High, you can kill your differential going around turns on pavement. I could be completely wrong, so hopefully someone with a little more knowledge will chime in.

Yes, leaving 4x4 in high or low on pavement will damage the drivetrain.

Only use 4x4 H/L on 100% snow, 100% soil/grass, etc and you will be fine.

Only use 4x4 if you know you are going to get stuck. Using it as a traction aid on the highway is a bad idea.

I've never gotten stuck in either my F150s. If you know how to drive and know your surroundings, you don't need it. It's called playing it safe.

But would I like 4x4? Yes and no. Yes, would be I could go offroading, but no because it would cost me more if something broke, especially out of warranty. Plus, I have no reason/time to go offroading... so it would be useless to have.

I've never been in the situation in the past 5 years where I ever needed 4x4 to get me out, unless I was screwing around... but since I don't, I have no problems.
