Probably got an injector hanging up on cylinder 1. You'll know for sure when it sticks wide open and bends a connecting rod or shears the bendix off the starter while cranking or turns the catalytic converters cherry red from the raw fuel getting dumped into the exhaust.

All that stuff is covered for you 2005 guys though, under recall 07M08. If/when something fails.

edited for speeling.

PRECISELY how my injectors started going...

Started around the KY/Virgina line... didn't lay down until almost Lexington (another few hours of highway driving). The 2005 is notorious for injectors...

On mine, it started missing. You could really 'feel' the motor miss via the pedal and also just sitting in the seat. Mine was very occasional initally and then did it a few times in a row... then a few more times in a row... then it went normal.

Several more miles down the road, the same symptoms.

Finally, it went into continual missing scenario and laid down - with the flashing CEL that you mention.

Others may have had different symptoms as I think some will fail immediately and others will slowly fail... Hit and miss (literally), I think.

I had a 98 Crown Vic that pulled several 30x codes. Replaced the COPs on those cylinders and all was good. But there again it could be the stupid POS injector on cylinder 1 taking a crap!

Long time no post for me...

OK, I think this just happened to my truck. Horrible shaking while driving. Pull over and turned it off. Had to move it out of the way after shutting it off. Started HARD. Towed to dealer and they tell me my starter is bad. Haven't talked to them since that call, but after reading this thread I am 99% positive the problem is related to the injectors. I am sure I am going to have to fight with them about my starter. Can anybody provide and feedback or help on how I can win this?

MUCHO THANKS!

Oh yeah, and I am sure I was an idiot and did not keep my letter relating to this notice.

My 03 Explorer with 4.6 had a flashing CEL and it was a bad COP causing a misfire. Just noticed that this thread is really old!

Oh good, they just called. They are not going to cover the starter. My blood is boiling. A truck with 39000 miles on it does not just all of the sudden have a starter go out at the exact time an injector sticks.

UPDATE
Got them down to me only having to pay $50. I figured for 50 bucks, I would rather pay than have a heart attack stressing over it and avoid looking like a complete ***. Of course, about half way home, my check engine light came on. At least it runs now.

I just started experiencing this problem with the CEL flashing, went to dealer this morning, as soon as I mentioned flashing check engine light, the guy immediately responds misfire. I am still waiting to hear from him. Hopefully it is fixed quickly, I leave for a trip on June 11th.

You were experiencing a random misfire which will be indicated by a flashing CEL, but will leave on readable DTC. Glad they got you up and running.

Truck runs GREAT. I knew I had some sort of misfire, you could feel it. Plus I used to do a little work on cars.

By the way just got my receipt today when I picked up the truck from getting my seat bottom replaced, the coil that went bad was #3. They checked the other coils for burn marks, they said the remaining are ok for now.
