Truck Alarm Systems

I am headed up to Detroit for the summer for an internship, and figured that I should get an alarm installed on my truck. I have done a little research, and searched the forums, but I was just wondering what everyone has? Also after having your alarms for a while what brand would you recomended? I am no electical expert, but is this something that I could install myself? I know their is a lot of wiring plus all the sensors have me nervous. Any opinions on alarms?

Thanks,

jrbhc8

I have a Code Alarm SRT6700 remote starter/alarm that I purchased from Travis at kcautosound.com. He pre-wires the unit and gives step-by-step instructions to do the install.

I was hesitant about doing the install myself but the instructions from Travis are great.

If I can do it anybody can.

Nice, I have heard some great things about Travis. If you don't mind me asking, could you go into more detail about the install. Nothing major, just some of the major things done to get the kit installed. I was planning on going with a code alarm with the remote start also. How hard is the remote start to hookup. I have heard it's hard.

jrbhc8,

I live in Ann Arbor and work at Circuit City and have been installing alarms/remote starts in vehicles for 6 years now...I could defintatly help you out putting one in and getting you a good price. We have DEI (www.directed.com) or (www.circuitcity.com). They are the best in the business. I have a Viper 5900 remote start/alarm systme on my F150 and I can start my truck from a mile away.

Just mount the unit under the dash. There are a couple of wires that tie into the wiring behind your headlight/dimmer switches. Then a harness that runs down by the parking brake for ground and several wires to tie into the door locks under the sill plate. Then another harness that runs to the ignition and PAT's module under the steering column.

The install is not hard just time consuming. I wish I would have had a razor blade to strip the wires. It would have been much quicker. All I had was a utility knife which didn't work so great.

The directions from Travis tell you exactly which wires that you need to tie in to.

I have no prior experience installing alarms or car audio systems and I was able to do it. I even had a quick question for Travis and he answered my call right away to help me out.

I also have a code alarm from Travis. As for the install, I am pretty educated in electronics (studied electrical engineering for two years) but you don't have to know a whole lot, Travis' instructions were pretty easy and straight forward giving you a step by step guide to follow. When I bought my unit he also sent his phone number along with the instructions in case you ran into a problem along the way (not sure if he still does this though)

If I were to buy another unit I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again!

Clifford RSX 3.5 alarm/remote start. Two way pager(s)...never had any problems at all...

Last monday I walked out on 3 guys about to break into my truck. One of them had a punch on the window about to put it through....I set off the alarm and they scrambled and ran...granted I got lucky to walk out on them, it would have gone off and paged me after they went through the window. Im now having 4 more shock sensors added to the 4 I already have, wheel sensors, an interior perimeter sensor, and DEI starter kill as well as having the sensitivity turned up. I may get false alarms but id like to keep my truck and the things in it. Id highly suggest the two way system.

If you have a factory keypad on the door, then you will need a code alarm system if you still want to use it.

eh, I still like the features on the Viper system, but it would still be nice to use the keypad. I'll have to think about this I didn't know the viper system took that feature away. Not too big of a deal I really like the viper setup though

I have a Auto Page 2 way remote system and I have had no issues at all either. Its sensor ranges from about a mile away depending on whats between you and the truck.

Thanks for all the responses. So far it looks like I may be going for code alarm. Especially since I still can use the keypad with it. That thing has saved me numerous times from being locked out. Does any one have the pdf's of the instructions travis sends out? I was just wanting to look at them to get a better idea. Keep your opinions coming!!

I would highly suggest the Viper 791xvr, I have it and am very happy with it, the only thing I would change to about it. Is longer range for the 2 way pager, and remote start.

I have sense installed a larger speaker, one in similar size of the alarms for houses, very loud and is SURE to scare people off.
