Got it, man this is going to help. Now I just have to take the back seat out again DOH!!
Looks like I was on the right track, it is either the instrument cluster, the harness somewhere or the VSM (Vehicle Security Module).

I ordered a VSM because I have the same issue with my 2003 expedition, but my door ajar light stays on. I just need to know where the VSM is located so I can change it and nowhere can I find a post that someone may have already poted that tells me. HELP!!
I just fixed all of my issues with my 2003 Expedition. I had the door ajar light staying on, sprayed lube and nothing, the radio would not go off when you open the doors, dome lights do not go on when the door was opened, daytime running lamps and 4x4 was not working, and the dealer could not communicate with the vehicle control module. With all of those issues you would think that the vehicle needed an exorcism instead of a repair. After 10 hours, and the help of a wiring shop manual, the problem was found. There is a wiring harness underneath the drivers side step where salt and dirt and other objects collect. There are three violet wires that are spliced into one leading up to the left kick panel area. This splice on my vehicle was corroded from the salt of our Minnesota winters and eventually let to a failure of multiple systems. This violet wire is the communication link between the vehicle control module and the instrument cluster. The corrosion stopped that communication, hence all the above stated problems surfaced. I found the shop manual on ebay.
