Almost bought a Factory FORD ESP, unitil....

Today I was contemplating buying a Factory FORD Extended Service Plan Warrantee unitl I read what not's covered. After choosing the Premium, 7 Year, 100,000mi warrantee with a $100.00 dedictable, with free rent a car, & after a $180.00 discount promotion, it came to $1925.00. I almost got it because I am at least keeping my 2007 SCREW that long. Listed among the items not covered were the "SPARK PLUGS", & "PLUG WIRES", I'm assuming COPS also, ie. wires. I declined because the Plugs are not covered I'm assuming if they snap one off in the cylinder head, also since bad COPS are a common problem.......For that kind of money, you would think that they would cover those items....their loss, I was close to pulling the trigger........

Technically those are normal maintenance items which would not be covered. It's only supposed to cover things that might break. Things like tires, oil, plugs, etc wouldn't normally be covered. Plug wires though...I'd think those would be.

Well that sucks! Thanks for the heads up. I was eventually going to look into the ESP, but may pass on it now.

They call it an extended warranty. But the Extended part includes the 3 years you get when you buy the vehicle.

What irks me is the fact that they say 7 years but in reality it is only 4 extended years.

I'm not buying it.

Word, I agree, but thats how they work, half of the people never use it and throw their money away to pay for the people who have the problems. Just takes the risk away from a person and gives it to a group of people...just like insurance...I guess I learned somethin from 4 years at PSU

Warranty does not mean that you can abuse & screw up the vehicle, then go back to the dealer & expect it to be fixed for free. Warranty only covers manufacturer's defects. I know a guy who crashed his vehicle. A body shop repaired the cosmetics (fenders, bumper, hood, grille). The transmission line was damaged as a result of either the collision, or the body shop guys' incompetence. He went back to his dealership (not a Ford in case anyone cares) and the dealership service department almost laughed. They snickered a lot and their eyes welled with tears. The transmission was almost empty of ATF & the gears were making funny noises. They told him, "boy, how's it our fault that you crashed your car?" The dealers can't warranty against the buyer's stupidity, negligence, and/or ignorance.

Extended warranties are a total crap shoot. Good to see you looked to see what's not covered because many people don't. However, there's an aweful lot of stuff that is covered. That little insurance up front MAY really help you down the road.

But like insurance, it's something many of us are willing to pay for, while understanding we may never need it.

FWIW, I've purchased 8 new Ford cars/trucks in the past 15 years. Each with an extended warranty. Only ONE of these vehicles didn't require any repairs covered under the extended warranty.

Mange your risk the way your comfortable.

My 2 cents...

Something else to consider is the ESP Premiumcare warranty is the best extended warranty you can buy, hands down IMO. Aftermarket companies are a joke to work with. I am a service advisor at a Ford delaership. The aftermarket companies will use any possibility of an 'out' to not cover the repair. They will go as far as sending out an inspector to verify the problem and if they find anything at all out of the ordinary, the repair is declined and you are on your own.
But anyways, you invest the money now and you have the peace of mind if something does go wrong, like engine or transmission (major repairs) you pay a $100 deductible and the ESP warranty just paid for itself. If you come across several minor repairs, pay for them out of your own pocket and do not use your ESP warranty. If you never use the ESP warranty a single time in the period that it is active, you can get a full refund of your money if you cancel it before it expires. But as soon as you use the ESP warranty once, you can no longer get a refund. So choose which repairs you want to be covered. If you have a major repair, use it.

As far as the plug wires go, your truck doesn't even have plug wires, and coil on plug assemblies are covered by the premiumcare warranty. The spark plugs are considered maintenance items. The ESP also coveres towing to the closest dealership. Just my .02 cents. I've never had an ESP myself, but I know they can be really handy to have.

I call BS on this, I terminated an extended care Ford warranty that had never been used and I received a pro-rated cheque based on my milage, I got 400 back on the 1800 I had spent. . .

Yeah those are wear and tear items, regardless of what manufacturer you buy from none of them cover items such as that.

This is exactly it - you don't buy insurance in hopes of using it, but rather as a safeguard in case you have to use it. To date I've never used anything of the thousands I've shelled out in premiums a month, but I am fully covered just in case.

Getting back to the ESP, it def. is a crap shoot as stated. It covers quite a bit of things but there are those few that it may not as well. I'd say go with it if it's financially possible just for the notion that if needed one day you'll have some sort of protection on quite a lot of areas of coverage.

But what do I know....

My dad purchases ESP on every vehicle he owns. Honda mini van dropped a toming belt at 60k and the motor was replaced by Honda. His Chevy AC system went out 2x. So for the last 2 vehicles he has probably come out ahead. He went ahead and purchased them on his 07 4 runner and my moms new Honda van. We will see how they hold up.

I look at it like this, if you have the cash to pay when/if something goes wrong put it in the bank and skip the ESP. If anything going wrong with your vehicle would bankrupt your *** then spend the extra 20 bucks a month knowing your covered incase something happens

You got ripped off then. I have personally worked with multiple customers that got a full refund if it was never used. Maybe it differs from dealership to dealership???
