When synthetic is worth using!
When synthetic is worth using!
Lately the weather at night & mornings has been in the teens & low 20's! Yeah mighty cold with a wind chill of 5-6 degrees! BUUURRRR! I leave for work at 0610Hrs, & it's freezing! Since my 2007's first oil change at 3K, It has been running exclusively on Mobil 1 5w20, I noticed a significant quietness upon startup since the switch since new. Even in warmer temps! I have to say, that in the recent cold temps that the 5.43v has been starting up in, the motor is silent at startup! The SOHC mod motors need fast lubrication to the top end, to remain quiet, & I have to say that I am amazed how fast the synthetic does the job in the frigid temps! I don't want to sound like a commercial, however with all the threads I have read on loud motors on startup, take note on my cold start experience!..............
The better flow characteristics of synthetic oil in freezing temps isn't new information. That's been the major selling point for years. What the majority of people don't realize is it still needs to be changed at around the same intervals as conventional oil. Oil's main jobs are to keep the moving parts clean, cool, and lubricated. Synthetics pick up the same amount of dirt over 3-5K as regular oil. It makes people feel better to think they can drive longer because they paid $3-$6 a quart for syn oil but it's just not the case. The main benefits of using synthetics are better flow in cold and better protection in summer heat.

It ceases to amaze me that some auto manufacturers and service center tell the customers to change their oil at 5k or 7.5k and sometimes 10k if they are running synthetic. I think I'll stick to my 3k oil changes and know my engine will last.

Watch out for hydrants in the snow when doing those donuts.
I agree for the most part with what others have mentioned. Mobil 1 and 5k intervals would be about ideal. Ford specs 5k intervals for the semi synthetic, no reason a full synthetic cant go the same. I swapped to mobil 1 recently and have noticed less noise also
