Drove a New 2008 Chevy yesterday, impressions!

Yesterday, a friend of mine picked up a new 2008 Chevy 5.3 Z-71 extended cab yesterday. He drove over to my house to let me take it for a spin. I wanted to compare it to my 2007 SCREW. Upon driving it on the highway & winding roads, it did feel peppy & much lighter that my 2007 SCREW, however it felt like I had substancially less TRUCK riding under me. It seemed lower to the ground also. I feel as though the F-150 is more TRUCK than the Chevy! The Chevy was not a bed vehicle, however the ride reinforced me that I like my FORD much better............

Alot of guys like GM's because they are in fact lower, and easier to get in and out of. I have had several comments on how high my '02 (it is pretty much stock too), most are by people that are older with back problems or are shorter, they do make a good point. A 4x4 truck doesn't have to be a towering monster, and it would be a golden chance to make the the FX4 more than a mere appearance package too by leaving it tall.

The GM's lack ground clearance! That is not a good thing, at least to me! The GM's will get hung up in heavy snow, or off road when things are not smooth...............

I sat in a 2008 4x4 Crew Cab with the "luxury" interior at the Tampa Bay International New Car Auto Show. It just didn't feel right.

What happened to the old days when GM touted their higher ground clearance? Remember those stump commercials? The differential hitting on the Ovals, but the Chebby clearing it?

There's some folks who would claim that the 04+ F150's ride like a car. Compared to older trucks I think this is so, but to me a smooth ride from a truck is a good thing. I like that my truck can haul all my crap and still give me a smooth ride. Some folks don't seem to like that though.

My dad has a old 1992 GMC, he uses it as a truck so the thing sits level or slightly under by now at 120k, the thing has always gone wherever he pointed it. The most vivid memory of it was a little over a year ago pulling a bumper pull livestock trailer with 2 cows in the through a feedlot shortly after a 3" rain. That was exciting to say the least, but it got in and out in one attempt and didn't require a tug in the least. The only time it has needed a pull was last March a 3' snowdrift developed right behind it in the parking lot, he called my uncle who was more than happy to show off his 2006 F-150 to pull him out, who also got stuck trying. It took a JD 4850 that was in the shop for a minor problem to unstick both, and my uncle managed to get stuck again trying to leave and needed another pull. That was a terrible storm, the first time that we also got our blading tractor stuck too.

Plus not that many people buy an F-150 for its offroad prowness, a TJ will wheel circles around one for half the money, and even most of those don't go offroad.

ever since i took my running boards off, ive had several people mention how my truck is pretty high off the ground, even at stock 4x4 level. man are they gonna be in for it when the 6" lift goes on

The GM might seem to sit a little lower, but it will still go anywhere a stock F150 will, maybe further. Dont forget, they have that rear locking differential...

I agree it drives more like a car though. Rides less heavy, extremely tight turning radius compared to the F150, etc.

That locker is an option, just like the limited slip is in the Ford. I would liek Ford to offer a selectable rear locker, but I doubt they will do it... Having said that, a good limited slip, and good driving skills will get me anywhere I want to take a full size pickup.

You should have said, "No thanks, that truck is ugly, and I refuse to be seen in it!"

I traded in a nbs silverado ext cab on this 04 Scab. I have to say that both trucks drive and ride like a car. The Ford drives much more like a SUV though, I don't feel comfortable slinging it around and I hate driving it to run errands. The Cheevee was about the same but felt a LOT lighter. I drove an 07 and 08GM truck and they are quite a bit more responsive and will set you back in the seat, this Ford has a long way to go to do that.
I think that Cheevee makes an ugly truck since 2002 or I may have got another one. They really need to use the Avalanche /tahoe front end and side styling on the 1500, those look pretty decent.
I love my Ford and the way it looks though, after all is said and done, I just wish it was lighter and more responsive without kicking it to the floor.

From what I gather the rear locker is standard/included in the Z-71 off road suspension package...........
