Weird clunking/grinding noise

I have a 2006 5.4 XLT supercrew and a few months ago I noticed that whenever I took of from a stop, there was a weird kind of clunking noise right at 1000 rpms or so. It wasnt major, you couldn't even hear it outside of the truck so I just kind of let it go. But it didnt go away, and now that its winter it seems to be worse, I mean the engine sounds rough all the way to, I dont know 1500 rpms or so. It sounds like it is coming from the driver side under the hood towards the back of the engine compartment almost right under the dash panels. It does it worse when the engine is cold, and it doesnt make the sound in neutral. However, I am pretty sure its not the TSB about the driveshaft slip yoke needing greased, because my brother had that problem and my symptoms are nothing like that. Any of you had the same problem? Any help?

No ideas... could be that TSB though... although, you might need some new Ujoints though... could be a possibility.

I had this same thing!!! Took my truck in cause the alternator failed, and when I picked it up, I noticed the grind noise from a dead stop, and it was alot worse when it was cold.

I think I found the culprit - check where your intake tube attaches to the inside of your fender. I found out that mine wasn't put back in all the way, and it was rattling around in the hole. I pushed it all the way in and made sure that big rubber grommet thing was sitting properly - no more grind noise.

Hope its the same for you.

THAISON-- THANK YOU!!!! That fixed the problem and a few other noises i had been hearing as well. I noticed that just as you said the intake tube had come out of the slot in the fender, and also wormed itself loose from the bolt that fastens it down on top of the engine. For a while whenever I drove over bumps I thought there was a rattle in the steering column, turns out it was just the intake tube rattling!! Cannot thank you enough, now my truck has no problems!! (got rid of the steering shimmy earlier this week also)!!!

Awesome man! Glad I could help....I know when I had that noise, you first hear it and think, huh, must have a new rattle. Then after it gets worse your mind gets off track and you start thinking your engine is gonna blow up and who knows what else.

But glad you are all straight now!

Yeah, I honestly thought that my engine wasn't going to last over 50000 miles when I heard the sound at it's worst. But its great now, it was a HUGE relief when I fixed it.
