Yes, 87 octane is fine. The only reason you would have to run anything higher would be if you were to buy a tuner and tune the truck to a performance high octane tune.

Lincoln Navigator fuel door requires 91 or better octane (my '02 5.4 32v anyways), but haven't seen anything like that on the two/three valve heads.

The 32v 5.4L engine in the Navigator is very different than the 24v 5.4L engine in the F150. He asked about an F150 5.4L.

Hence why I said I have never seen 91+ octane restrictions on two/three valve heads :P

I have only seen it on 32v motors.

Yep, 87 is specified from '04 up. I usually run 89 in the summer when I tow my camper.

BTW freekyFX4 nice shot of the Super Duty.

If you are at altitude you can run 85 octane without any problems and save 10 cents a gallon.

You can run 85 at around 4000 ft. or higher, but the cost of the fuel is the same as the popular three at lower elevation. When I go to OH once in awhile, the 87 stuff is the same price as the 85 here in CO, so we are the ones paying more for lower octane fuel.

Thanks...my friend went and bought a Scion xB on Friday and he wanted to get some pictures of it. We went to a park and shot a bunch of his car and a few of mine. Here's one of both vehicles...

The only reason I make the switch when towing is because when I use 87 it tends to ping when merging or pulling up hills. Nothing really bad but noticeable, switching to 89 is all it took to cure it. A few extra cents to prevent long term damage is money well spent. That's the good thing about the 3v 5.4, the compression ratio let's you run anything from 87 to 91 with no problems.

BTW, no, there's no real difference in MPG.

My '04 runs great on 87, every 7 0r 8k miles I put in some Techron additive. Low compression engines do not require high octane gas.
