New gears tomorrow....break in questions...

I'm picking my truck up tomorrow after getting 4.10 Precision gears and they told me they had a 500 mile break in period where I need to not drive it for more than 30 minutes at a time. While I'm all about taking it easy, no WOT and crazy highway speeds, does this sound normal?

I needed to go out of town for work on Monday which is about 130 miles and now I'm worried about driving there.

What's going to happen and is 30 min driving sessions for the first 500 miles normal?

This is on a 2wd

Thanks.

It's about an hour back from Orlando to my place, I stopped in the middle and let it cool down for about 15 minutes. I just took it easy for the rest of the 500 miles. Don't worry, just make sure they know you're following the break in ..

PS: Make sure they replaced your pinon seal, they didn't do mine and it started leaking!!

I would just make couple pit stops on you little trip to let stuff cool for awhile.

When I had the gears replaced in my work truck I was told not to tow, pull, or beat on the truck for the first 500 miles also. That lasted about 200 miles, and I started towing our work trailers around (the smallest one weighs 3000lbs). Now over 60,000 miles later I have not had any problems.

Also, change the gear oil after the break in.

Don't sweat it at all. No need to change the gear oil or freak out about driving more than 30 minutes. When you bought your truck, did the dealer ever say “Don’t drive this thing for more than 30 minutes at a time so the ring-n-pinion can break in”.

Seriously, don’t worry about it at all. Don’t tow or drive it hard for a few hundred. Just drive it like a normal vehicle and you’ll be fine. If this place set it up correctly, then you’ll have no problems at all.

you mean your truck didnt already have 500 miles on it. mine had 20,000 already on it but this was just so the dealer knew everything was working correctly

Changing the gear oil is going to be needed, there will be metal shavings.

Hi Thump!

A ring and pinion are harden steel. They will not deteriorate in the same way bearings in a block do. That is why the service interval for a rear end is in the tens of thousands of miles for brand new vehicles. I'm not saying changing the rear end oil will hurt it, but it's really not necessary. If he REEEEEALLY wants to do it, by all means, have at it, but rest assured, it's not crucial for a rear end.

Example: I set up my 9" with a 4.30 and had it at the track 3 weeks later pulling 1.45 60ft times. Still has the same oil in it. (the car sees about 1500-2000 miles/year).

Again, it's not a bad idea, but it's also not necessary.

I know all of that but like you said, it's not a bad idea. A lot of stuff isn't necessary but we do it just to be on the safe side!

I'm going to send you a PM about the Mustang ..

Mine had a grand total of 26 miles on it when I drove off the lot, that was including the test drive that I took and I didn't take it easy on it during the test drive. I have always thought that it was kinda funny about the break in on the gears when you buy trucks new and don't have to do that.
