New gears tomorrow....break in questions...
Thanks for all the replies on break in.
Picked up the truck tonight. I drove around 5 miles and initially had a hard time telling the difference, so i quickly pulled over and re-installed Edge back to level 3. (I always take it out whenever I leave it places). Once I did that, WOW. I haven't given it probably more than 35% throttle yet according to Edge and what a difference. It just accelerates with ease now compared to stock. Even once the torque converter locks the truck still pulls nicely whereas before it wouldn't do anything unless I unlocked it. I can't wait to floor this thing. When I put the 20's on from the 18's it killed my acceleration and now it seems back to giddy up.
My rpm's didn't go up too much either. I got up to 80 on the highway for a few seconds and put it on cruise. Before I was at around 2150 according to Edge. Now I was at 2420 or so. I also cruised at 70 for awhile and reset the mileage computer and it said I was getting 20.4 for awhile. When I had 3.55's it would say around 18-19. I have a hard time believing it would get better but it seems to hold 70 so much easier than before, it almost struggled when I put the 20's on.
Hopefully with a little luck I'll have my new tuner from Troyer next weekend and my 3.5" AF1.
I'm looking forward to seeing the new performance diff once all this stuff is in.
Anyhow, I love these things and I think this is the best money I've spent so far.
Now my patience is running out for Troyer! I've held good so far! lol
Also, I think a break-in is definitely warrantied as it smells like a burning smell whenever I drive somewhere and stop.

I respect that everyone talks "break in" but its BS, nothing less. Components are precision made, perfectly if not next to it. Ring and pinions are matched sets, put one in a semi and pull a D11 CAT not 10 min later for 10 hours up hill. It doesn't matter... We in-frame engines at work every day and run them up just so they let go in our parking lot (if you forgot to torque something) vs on the hwy. Warm up any component to operating temp or close to it, then walk on it and never look back.... sure the more you change oil the better, but to an extent your flushing money down the drain. Those magnets in your axle housing are there for a reason.... Id wait till the service interval of whatever? Then change your oil. If you stand by your work, sleep at night.... I do.
Again, thanks to all for the repies on break-in.
I will mention that when the guys at the store were going over the break-in procedures changing fluid 500 miles down the line was not mentioned.

My truck is in the shop right now getting a set of Yukon 4.56's installed. I'll let you know what the shop tells me about break-in period when I pick it up. Supposed to be done around 4 PM, but I should be tailgating at the UH game at that time.
Having driven my truck some more I have noticed a strange whine coming from what sounds like the rear end or tranny inbetween 44-50 mph. It starts at around 44 and goes away at 50. If you cruise inbetween those speeds it stays there. If you decelerate through them it dies down. Very odd. It made no such noise before the gears and I'm curious as to what it can be.
If it continues I'll swing by the shop and see if this is normal. I can hear it over the radio.

I'd give them a call ASAP to let them know about the problem.

Picked up my truck yesterday after getting the 4.56 gears installed. I asked the shop owner about a break-in period and he said to simply take it easy, drive a little a let it rest. Even though he said it he then said that I really didn't have to worry about anything no matter how I drive it. I also asked about a gear oil change at 500 miles and he said that that isn't necesary.
It's not necessary but I'd advise you to do the gear oil change. I have the Mag-Hytec differential cover so it's super easy to do not to mention the plug has a magnet on it. After I saw all of the metal on it, I'm glad that I did do it. I advise everyone to do it.
After spending close to $600 to have the gears changed per differential, there is no way I would skip the break in period or changing the fluids. I followed the break in procedure and also changed the fluids after 500 miles. I did have metal shavings in the fluid that came out.
It only takes about 15min. tops to change the fluid. That's a small amount of time to possibly save yourself another $600.

Gear Oil, Additive and Break-In
Use a gasket or 100% silicone to seal the cover or third member to the housing. Use only high quality name brand gear oil and fill the differential until the oil spills out the plug hole. Positraction carriers require anti-friction additive.
All new gear sets require a break-in period to prevent damage from overheating. After driving the first 15 or 20 miles you must let the differential cool for 30-40 minutes before proceeding. Drive 500 easy miles before towing. Tow for very short distances (less than 15 miles) and let the differential cool before continuing during the first 45 towing miles. Change the gear oil after the first 500 miles. This will remove any metal particles or phosphorus coating that has come from the new gear set.
ANY OVERLOADING OR OVERHEATING CAN CAUSE THE GEAR OIL TO BREAKDOWN AND THE RING & PINION CAN FAIL.
