Thanks! It doesn't sound like I need the AM/FM (amateur) radio. I think that a CB radio would be all that I would need.

Canes, I thought about that mount, but wasn't sure about line of sight problems. I'll have to check it out when I get home. Thanks.

I might be in violation of a LOT of forum rules here. And I apologize to the mods in advance. Smack my hands and delete my post if I shouldn't be doing this, but....

www.cbradiotalk.com is probably the best resource on the net for info on setting up a CB...

I can tell you that, if you want the best CB performance, you need to not worry so much about which radio, but rather your antenna system.

I have heard a ton of puny little Cobra 19s stomping over the big name converted ham rigs because the Cobra is hooked to good quality low loss coax, a well grounded mount, a quality stainless steel spring, and a 102" whip.

I personally run the following CB rig. (Which will be hard to duplicate outside of Ebay).

Radio Shack TRC-465 AM/SSB 40 Channel CB Radio. (Great radio, been LONG out of production though, hard to find.).
Radio Shack Cat No #21-1177 Noise Cancelling Amplified Microphone. Keeps road noise out of my audio signal, and bumps up the audio a bit. Again, out of production and hard to find.
Procomm 18 foot 100% double shielded clear jacket RG8x coax with Amphenol PL-259s (Hand soldered connectors, not crimp on garbage).
Procomm Heavy Duty Stud mount installed in the top of the tool box.
Hustler C-29 stainless steel pot belly spring. This spring is NOT reccomended. It DOES give good SWR, but rusts really quickly. The spring coils are stainless, but the top and bottom of the spring assembly are plain steel and rust FAST...
Hillman Fastener 3/8" Stainless Steel Split Lock Washers to replace the vendor provided steel ones. Again reduction of possibility for corrosion in the antenna circuit.
Radio Shack Stainless Steel 102" Whip Element.

I had to ground my toolbox directly to the frame of the truck with a ground strap, BUT... my little, LEGAL 4watt AM, 12watt SSB radio can be heard on a daily basis over 20 miles with me on a high point, not accounting for skip. Simply line of sight.

The hunt clubs around me and the guys I hunt with all have and use CB, some are on 2m, but not many. And those that are have a CB on at the same time anyway...

You get a lot of riffraff on CB, but it isn't like it was 20 years ago...

If I were to set up a new rig now, I would set up my antenna the same way, but start with a Galaxy DX959 and add a noise cancelling Power Mike like a Skythumper. I've just had the Realistics around so long that I kind of had to reuse them... (I own 3 of the TRC-465s, and 1 TRC-503).

If you don't want to add a toolbox or drill any holes, look into a stake pocket mount...

A lot of guys run the Predator 10K, Monkey Made MM99s, and other aluminum coil type antennas. They are okay, but remember, in an RF radiator, (antenna) any coil induces loss. Keep your antenna in the right length and as straight as possible for best performance.

You hit on two VERY important issues there.

#1. Since I moved my antenna to my toolbox, I have NOT hit the back of the cab. I hit all the time with the front of the bed mount. I could have isolated the antenna with a tennis ball though and been fine.
#2. Backlighting is WAY important on these radios. I have a lot of other truck mods that will take priority over this, but I really do want a Galaxy DX959 (I like shooting skip on 38lsb too you know!).

One thing about these trucks, not sure about the Super Duty, but I know the F150 is a PAIN IN THE A** to install a CB in because of the design of the dashboard... Most modern trucks are that way though...

I wish they would make a good, in dash mount, single DIN radio with the features I want like SSB, backlighting, WX etc...

Depends on the size of your particular radio, and if you are 4x2 or 4x4. (The T-case shifter gets in the way on 4x4).

I am trying to dig up a bracket for mine and move my install to the pocket under the cigarette lighter. Will post pics when done.

Thanks dbhost. I have joined a couple of those forums and I hope to get the information I am looking for. Hopefully I will have a CB before a road trip I am taking in a week and a half. I'll keep you posted.
