Does it pay off?

Given that our trucks eat more gas than air(j/k) and better gas gives you better mileage, has anyone figured out whether the extra money for plus/premium gas pays off in mileage? And yes, I did a search.

It evens out for me, with the proper tune of course.

With the tuner, of course. I guess it is useless for me, but I'm just wondering about a stocker. You know increased $$ vs increased MPG

If you do not have a tune for 93 octane than no it won't pay off. It'll be a waste. I can tell you that I've ran a 93 octane tune for all of my miles but 1,000 of them and when I did pull my fuel filter at 15,000, it was perfectly clean.

Sounds good to me. I guess one of my "givens" was wrong then. I got VMP tunes on the way, so SWEET!! Thanks for the input.

I notice a big jump in performance in my Dakota when I drop in 92/93 octane... and that's without any tuner... but the engine automatically adjusts for the octane level by using the knock sensors... that is according to the Mopar Service Manual... thus I don't need a tuner like I would need for my F150.

But it isn't lieing when it does adjust. It's like I've gained 20 hp and 20 ft/lbs torque... it's a kick in the pants noticeable.

I've dropped 93 in my F150, and there is no difference... in fact it makes it go slower and it gets worse gas mileage.

Yes, I'm talking about the factory service manual for my Dodge Dakota and how it states that it adjusts the timing and such using the knock sensors for correct firing when using different grades of gas.

There's a lot of info about this engine out on the web... it's amazing technology that is stuffed into that 4.7l v8... some of which I wish Ford would include.

Premium fuel should provide slightly better mileage on any FI vehicle, especially in town. Whether or not you get your money back on the fuel is another story.

Nope, I've tried it. Same driving habits. Same weather patterns. No difference.
