35x12.5x18 Toyo Open Country M/T
I went to the local tire shop today and got a few Toyo M/T's mounted up on my stock FX4 rims. The 35" tires actually fit, but when we stuck em on the truck, 1 little issue existed.
The sidewall of the tire is 1/4" from touching the upper ball joint on the control arm. I could have sworn there were people out here on this site running 35" on stock rims. Anyone? I couldn't get a warm fuzzy, so I decided not to pick them up.
They were quoting me $1800 (tax and mounted) for 4. Is that a good deal? I'm going to have to fork over an additional $1200 to get rims with 1" more backspacking than stock rims.
I need to decide within the next week or so though. I drop my truck off to get shipped to Hawaii next week, or early the week after that.
The shop also had some Cooper SST M/T. Those things look amazing, and were $100 less per tire than the Toyo's.
Sorry for the long post. Basically, my question is, is it safe to run the 35" tires on my stock rims with such a small amount of clearance?

You will be fine. A lot of people don't realize how tight the fit is on the new trucks in relation to the ball joints/control arms. I realized it when removing my 22's from my Expy before taking it to the body shop for repair. When the deer hit the Expy in the area of the wheel, it actually pushed the top of the tire over enough for it to touch the ball joint! You could see the rub mark on the tire and upper control arm where they touched.

yeah, I know the price is high. Everything I've seen on the net is $300-320 each.
yep, a major hold-up for me is the Hawaii part. I don't exactly have alot of time...especially since shipping could take me almost 3 weeks (quoted shipping time).
thanks guys...but anyone running these on their stock rims?

A lot of people are running them on stock wheels, don't worry. No problems.
The price is pretty high but you've got to be willing to pay to play. Although I did find 38x15.50R20s for $1,800 last time I looked.

tomarrow will see what happens
on a side note, what would be a good price to ask for my FX4 rims and tires (275x65x18)? they have Wrangler AT/S rubber that has about 75% life left and 1 rim has about 1" worth of scratch on it, otherwise the other 3 are perfect. once I get this whole thing worked out, I'll post 'em in the classified section and probably eBay.
