Exclamation Oil level?? Help...

2004 Ford F150 V8.

Changed my oil about 5,000 miles back. Used Mobile1 full synthetic oil. Used about 6.5 qts to full. Level was good. Right to the max line. Checked it after about 2,500 miles and the level was great.

Checked it today at 5,000 miles and the level is way past max line?? What is going on here? I know how to read an oil stick. It actually sat in garage all day. Went out, started it up and ran it for a minute and then shut it down. Oil level is way past max line!! Can anyone explain this to me?

I am in panic mode right now!!!

If you're a Canuck, and you put in 6.6 litres (that's spec), it should have been reading right in the middle of the cross hatched area on the dipstick, as it's supposed to.
If you put 6.5 quarts in, you're half a quart shy of what you should have put in..... again, that's what the specifications call for.

So I shouldn't worry about it. The fact that the oil level reads about 3 inches past the max line??

I figured 6.5 quarts was perfect as was the level after I changed it. But today it is way past the max line and I am freaking out! What is happening??

My guess is you're getting oil up in the tube and not getting an accurate reading. Let it sit overnight, and don't start it. Just pull out the dipstick and see where it sits.
Also make sure you're on relatively level ground.

I never check my oil.

I pour 7qts in at the time of change, and hope 7qts comes out when i drain it in 3-5k miles...

I checked mine about a week or so ago before heading up north with a truckload of people, gear, and boat in tow. After 7000 km's it was down about 1/8th of a quart. No worries, but I did add a touch to bring it back up to the middle of the cross hatched area between the add and full marks.

3 inches past the max line? That don't sound right. Take the dip stick out and smell the fluid, hopefully it doesn't smell like gasoline, might have a leaking injector. Check it in the morning before you start it and see if it's still that high, if it is you either put to much oil in or something is wrong.

Which V8. The 5.4 takes 7 quarts, and the 4.6 takes 6 quarts. If you put in 6.5 on a 4.6, you overfilled it. Also you need to have the engine off for a while before checking the oil. It was probably still dripping down from the heads onto the dip stick.
