One question that I've always wondered is, does a sun/moon roof affect the structural integrity of a vehicle? Would a truck with a sun/moon roof that rolled over fare worse than one without the sun roof? In other words, do they cause your vehicle to be less safe?

 

I know it doesn't answer your question, but I have the factory one and never use it. If the dealer would have had one without a the moonroof, I'd have gotten it. Just my 2 cents, before spending the money just make sure its something you actually will use, or its just a waste of money.

I also have one in my wifes explorer and its the same thing, never used. When we first got it and I did open it, the buffeting sound was so bad, I couldn't leave it open.

 

Another thing I forgot about it. I'm not sure if you need the visor thingy, but a little window play will fix the problem a head-pounding air-buffetting sound.

 

I looked into it but never did it for fear of leaking. Wabasto is suposed to be the best n they make them for OEM. The key, I think, is in the installation. If you do it, ask around at a bunch of car dealers. Most will recommend the same place in all probabilitiy.

It took me a few to realize that was a joke... I was a little upset that teh idea existed for a second.

 

I was going to get one in my cadillac CTS from the dealer and they said it was an aftermarket one and came with a lifetime warranty and they priced it at about $1000. I think if you find a good reputable company that offers a nice warranty I think you will be alright.

 

I thought that was the case. I've had it rain when I left it open, and the water was no where to be found, just disappeared.

Like a lot of things, it's a matter of preference. I would expect you have no use for heated seats either. When parking it on hot sunny days, I'll crack the moon roof instead of a window. I'll even keep the shade closed and the moon roof open to let the heat out, but not let the sun in.

I'm ok with cold, but don't deal with heat all that well. Last weekend I helped a neighbor cut down a few trees using a 65' cherry picker. I think it was about 10* outside with very little wind. On the other hand, I do very little in July when it gets over 80.

you get what you pay for. a cheap moonroof will leak. it is better to stay OEM with this one. That way you get the molded sheet metal that is already cut for the unit...and will hold and drain any water that leaks by the seal

I know I don't post much; but I work in an aftermarket Parts/Performance Store. We've been installing aftermarket sunroofs since 1975. The first thing that popped in my head when I saw this post was, "I hope that no one is thinking about putting a sunroof in a Regular Cab." The Reg Cabs (and I think the Extended, but don't quote me on that) have slots in the roof. There is no way to install a roof in the Reg. cab and avoid leaks. Even if it's a good roof, and It's installed correctly the slots will not seal up correctly. Two, please don't install one of these yourself. Not only is it very tricky to get all of it cut correctly; but any reputable shop should warranty their work (I can't speak for every one, I just know that we will back up our work, and I wouldn't take my truck somewhere that wouldn't). Three, between the headliner and the sheet metal of the roof, there are ribs in the frame. As long as the shop doesn't saw through the ribs, adding a sunroof will NOT change the stability of your truck. As a general rule I don't like cutting through them, because it creates a safety issue (roll over). Once again, i can't speak for any shop but my own, but if it causes a safety problem I'll turn the job down. A $900 sale isn't worth the worry on my conscious.

Hey Tylus - I'm assuming your sunroof is aftermarket?

 

I've been planning to add one to my Lariat Scab, just can't seem to get ahead enough to save the $1200. Webasto is my planned brand and I plan to use a shop here that is the one that does most of the dealer installs. I saw one they put into a F150 Limited and it looked OEM - can't speak to leaks but it does come with a warranty.

And yes, the earlier post was correct, you loose the overhead storage bin, they cut it off right at the end of the map light pod and cap it, but again, the one I saw in a Limited looked absolutely stock and I'd have to hope someone who sprung for a Limited would not do something that would ruin their vehicle.

I had one in my 03 Expy and LOVED it and it never leaked - used it all the time. Had an aftermarket in my 88 Mustang and no leaks. I just wish I could find someplace that could put the old style T-tops in - now that'd be cool!

 

I have always wanted a sunroof in my truck. I wonder if it is possible to install a glass roof on these things like on the mustangs. Now that would be sick. Even though it wouldn't be a sunroof I still think it would be badass because i've never seen it done on one of these trucks
