Rear Diff oil change

How much does it take to fill it up and what kind are yall using?

I've got a 946 mL bottle of Lucas Synthetic gear oil out in the garage but it's a $20 bottle and it would probably take at least 3 of em to fill up the rear end.

A little over three quarts, and I use Motorcraft 75W140 and XL3 friction modifier.

I'll give another vote for RP. In addition to being a great synthetic gear lube, it also has the perfect balance of friction modifier forumulated into it... My LS will still chrip the tires when taking off from a turn, yet it gives no harshness or clunking... If you go with the Motorcraft brand, then you also have to add the FM yourself, and there's a chance that it will either be too "loose" or too "tight". But for me, the RP is just right!

I'm in the process of replacing all the oils in my truck with RP. I know the Rear-end oil is good, but what about the engine and tranny oil? Are they just as good?

I put RP in my tranny back in July. All good. Will now put in Trnsfr case and rear end.

But in engine I'm using Mobil 1 Extended performance 5/20...

Try to suction the fluid first through the filler plug. It makes the change less messy. The other thing you want to make sure the filler plug can be removed with ease before proceeding with the fluid change.
Torque Specs
cover bolts 33
Filler Plug 22

Through the fill plug on the driver's side of the axle housing. Use the nipple provided with the quarts of oil you bought and shoot it in through there.

Alternatively, you could take the ABS sensor out and dump it in through the top of the housing. You may need a small funnel for this.

Hours and hours of reading on www.bobistheoilguy.com will tell you that Royal Purple makes a decent gear lube, but their motor oil is highly over-rated and over-priced for what it is. It's more on par with name brand synthetics like Penzoil Platinum, Syntec, etc... It is NOT really comparable to other botique oils like Amsoil, Redline, Motul, etc... It's a decent oil, but not great... Again, speaking about their motor oil only.

But in my experience, it's difficult (if not impossible) to get the last 1/4 bottle of fluid out of the container just trying to shoot it in throught the fill plug. But they do sell hand pumps that screw right into the 1 qt bottles, which makes it a little easier.

Just thought I'd add this in case anyone is searching. If you've got the Mag-Hytec cover you'll want to fill it with 5 bottles. I use Royal Purple so no friction modifier is needed.

When you can't get the last 1/4 bottle out, open a new one. After making space in the new one, dump the remains from the first bottle into the second. That way the most waste you'll have is a 1/4 at the end.
