Oil pan gasket replacement at 48k miles

My 2004 Screw has been leaking a little oil for a couple weeks. I change the oil and filter so I know it wasn't cross threaded. Took it into a garage I trust and they said the oil pan gasket is leaking.

Cost to replace gasket and oil change is $525. The gasket is only ~$25, and the rest labor. They have to loosen the engine mounts and jack it up to get the oil pan out.

Anyone else have this problem? Is this a fair price?

TIA

This is a very common occurence with the 5.4 3v's.
I know several here that it has effected, including myself. However mine did not start leaking until I switched to Mobil 1 @ 10,000 miles. ( I am not rapping Mobil 1). Several have leaked from the oil filter mounting unit also. You can do it yourself but you better have the necessary equipment to do so.

Thats interesting what you say about Mobil 1. I've used Mobil 1 since day one in both my 2004 and 2005. My 2005 has about 38k miles, hopefully it won't have the gasket problem.

I was just in sticker shock with that quote, but from what I hear its allot of labor.

Changing the gasket on the oil pan is a PITA. You have to lift the motor up a good 6-8" becuase you not only have to get the pan out around the front K member but you also need room to manuver it out around the oil pump pick up tube which sits about 1/2" above the lowest part of the sumped end of the pan.

Oil pans are easy on a two wheel drive, don't have to jack the engine up or anything. They suck on a 4x4 though.
