Am I screwed?! AC Problems

Well, for the past couple weeks my A/C has been blowing out hot air (not good seeing that we're going through a heat wave now). I had some time yesterday to drop it off at our Radiator Guy and get a call from him today saying that my Evaporator is toast, it has a "small" leak in it. He then tells me that it'll be around $1500 to fix. Has this happened to anyone here? If so, how much did you pay? I have a hookup at the dealer and i'll most likely be taking it there but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this as well. Thanks

Keep in mind that I've never had an evaporator go out... But looking at Fast Parts Network, a new evap assembly for your truck only runs $140... Now I do know that alot of labor is involved, as pratically the entire dash has to be removed... Seems to me that $1500 is way too high. If it were me, I'd probably take it somewhere to have the a/c system evacuated. Then replace the evaporator myself. It should make for a nice weekend project.

But before you do that, you may also want to take it to an actual Ford tech, and have the confirm that the problem is in-fact the evap. Otherwise you may spend all that time & money replacing it, and your a/c still wouldn't work... To me, the $75 (or so) that a dealership would charge to diagnose the problem would be money well-spent.

Once air gets in the system there are other parts that are recommended to be changed. I would get a second opinion anyway and have them list the work to be done to get a better idea of what you are being charged.

Can't help you with the AC problem, but it has def been hot here.

If you had red truck that you had as a prerunner before you got your 04 then you were in one of my math classes at palomar a while ago. Don't even know how I rembered the name. But I had just gotten the blue scab about the same time got your truck.

you could fix that problem in just a few hours in your drive way i really wouldnt do that, i would have your system vaccumed, then replace the evap, and take it to a a/c shop to have it pressure tested.. but how does he knows its the evap if its blowing hot air have u tried to just do a recharge and add a uv leak detector to find the problem yourself. it would save the 150 dollars to have the a/c diagnosed, because to even find out its the evap you would have to look at it to see if its leaking. the only way to find it would be to run a leak detector through there grab a small black light and search your lines, and hoses if you dont see a leak then you assume its one or too things

1. you just ran out of a/c using it which can happen because there is lots of fittings and etc involved which can have slow small leaks.

2. it is your evap which to check you would pull the dash to check with a black light also...

btw if it has a "small" leak you can put some super sealer in the system from autozone which would seal that leak then just recharge it with the synthetic a/c booster and it would be better then what it was when you bought it new.

My mom was quoted $600 for her 05 kia. The guy is very fair in pricing and service.
