Broken side mirror & 3rd brake light leak.

My sister called me last night with a few problems. So I told her I'd fix this stuff for her when I go down to see her next weekend.

The truck is a 04 Scab. I've heard about the 3rd brake light leak, but never read any good solution for it, mainly because my 05 never leaked. What's the best/easiest/cheapest way to fix this? I was thinking about pulling the light and putting some silicon under it, I know that would fix it. Is there a gasket that just needs replaced?

The side mirror is broken. Some punk *** biatch tried jumping out of some bushes and scaring her on the street she lives on. Don't know how the mirror got broke, but it did. She said it was just the glass that broke. Can I replace just the glass or is it easier/better to just do the whole thing?

I'm guessing that both of these fixes can be done fairly quickly and easily. If there's any special tools I might need let me know. She lives 2 hours from me & I want to make sure I take what I need.

Thanks.

I believe Ford has an updated seal for the 3rd brake light that's supposed to fix the problem. You could just remove the light and run a thin bead of clear silicone around the edge, then reinstall it. This will make it difficult to remove later if the bulbs ever need to be replaced though. One trick I use is to put a light film of oil on one surface, that will allow the silicone to seal but you'll still be able to pull it apart to service the bulbs.

It is possible to replace just the broken mirror glass, it is an involved process. All the kits that I've seen come with pretty complete instructions so it is something you can do yourself.

A tube of RTV will seal up the 3rd Brake Light or you could get her a Recon LED 3rd Brake Light! . . like TBird said it will make pulling it off a lot harder when it comes to change bulbs. I've never heard of the oil trick so that might be something to think about trying out.

She just sent me a pic. It's the passenger side mirror, it's craked from top to bottom.

T-bird, do you recall how much just the glass was? I did a quick search on ebay and found several mirrors for $50-$60. That was the whole assembly. I don't mind replacing the whole thing, just trying to find the easiest/cheapest way to do it. I'll have to check with my service guy at Ford and see if he has any new gaskets.

Thump, she won't give a damn what it is as long as it quits leaking.

$18 bucks sounds good. How hard is it to replace just the glass? I don't think it's heated, but it is power.

It just pops in and out. If it takes you longer than 30 seconds, you're doing something wrong!
