Pinging Under Light Load/Cruise

I need some suggestions on what to look for. My 07 5.4, now with 17K, has recently started to ping under light load and cruising conditions. Shows up most in the 35 to 50 range. The only performance mod I've got is a Magnaflow SI/SO, but that's been in place now for at least 10K miles. I changed the fuel filter about 5K miles ago too, when the truck seemed to get sluggish.

One other thing, I've had this pinging over at least the last 10 tanks of gas, from different stations too.

Any suggestions? If I can find a fix on my own, it's easier then dealing with my local dealers service department.

Thanks in advance

I tow a 5000 lb. boat and it don't ping. I've been hearing bad new about the 2007 models. These trucks are made to work so you shouldn't be pinging weather you use 87, 89, 93, 1000. You have a warranty!

If you dont have time to get to the dealer through some premium fuel in the tank and see what happens but I would hit the dealer as soon as you can.

If it runs with a very light ping then it's nothing to worry about as the engine is designed to run that way under certain conditions. If it sounds like a beer can with a handful of pennies inside then investigation is needed. The obvious thing is to make sure that your using a minimum 87 octane fuel. Outside of that it could be a knock sensor problem, a faulty coolant temp sensor, or even one of the sensors for the variable valve timing.

It sounds like it's time to visit the dealer and use some of that warranty.
