Straightening steering wheel

Can anyone tell me how to straighten my steering wheel? It's slightly off center and really annoying. Is it a do it yourself thing or should I just take it to the shop? I traced the steering shafts to the steering gear, removed the nut at the bottom and turned the wheel straight but when I buttoned it back up the dang wheel was right back off center.

It's not your steering wheel that's off, it's your front wheels that are mis-aligned. Take it to a alignment shop and get the front end straightened out. ~$65.

You will need to have it aligned at a shop. When you get the alignment, tell them that the wheel is not straight.

Don't listen to these fools, adjust the tie-rods (in equal turns). I will be doing mine tonight as my truck tracks straight but the wheel is off-center.

Some "fools" rest easier knowing it's done right and straighter than they probably could have done.

Don't listen to this fool, take it to the pros. You can adjust the tie rods to get the wheel straight but end up with a slight toe in/out that will wear the tires in a hurry. The only way to do it properly is to use the right equipment that will make sure everything stays in spec.

Thanks for the replies. It's probably best if I keep the wrenches out of my hands for this type of thing.
