I'm currently vacationing with family in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Because I reside in Virginia, and radar detectors are illegal there, I'm taking advantage of being here and have [finally] decided to purchase one before returning home a week from today.

I've researched the beejeezuz out of these for close to two months and have nailed it down to one: Escort Passport 8500 X50. Two questions -

Anyone have anything to add about this radar detector?

The local Best Buys here where we're staying has it for $344.99 [which, BTW, is more than RRP HERE]. Anyone from this area know where I can save a little more? We're staying in Nth Myrtle Beach but I'll travel a little to save a lot.

Obviously, I can save more online, but nobody will mail it to me in VA.
im not from that area so i cant help you with pricing but my friend has that detector and it is AWESOME you will love it. it detects it from 2 miles away at times, and over/around hills. it really is quite impressive.

I also love my x50 (blue)
I got mine on ebay brand new. There are some good deals to be found there.
as for performance. It has saved me a few times. I love it and will never be without one again.

I have both a V1 and an 8500 .. have had both for several years .. after using them both for extended time on the same routes, I prefer the 8500 .. I think it detects better and falses less than the V1 ..

plus, it is cheaper .. I have the Red version, didn't think the blue was worth the extra $50

I've got a cobra 11-band. Many will say it is junk but it works for me. It will pick up the po po over the hill and around the turns. I think the new cobras are all 12 band. They are $100-$230 at bestbuy or circuit city

Thanks for the replies.

I went out this afternoon and purchased the Blue Escort Passport 8500 X50.

Just about everyone I've engaged in conversation with online over the last few weeks has told the the resolution of the BLUE is significantly better than the RED.... even though they are identical in every other area.

The Best Buy's salesman - who seem to be very genuine in his approach and actually steered me away from the more expensive & latest Escort Passport 9500i HERE, a GPS version of the 8500 X50 - told me he had owned both the RED and BLUE and there was a noticable difference in resolution of the two.... especially in daylight or "glarry" light. Just quickly on the recently released Escort Passport 9500i: he said first impressions were excellent but performance wise, the 8500 X50 was on par and the extra $100.00 wasn't worth it.

The extra fifty bills for the BLUE wasn't gonna change the course of my life so I bit the bullet.

I've yet to pull it out of the box but I'll play around with it in the next few weeks - I have some major travelling to do up-n-down the East Coast - and will refresh this thread and give my feedback for anyone else intersted in purchasing one.

Thanks again.
