It is a piece of cake using the cup style that fits over the end of the filter, a 10" extension and a ratchet. Get it from underneath, from in front and over the front axle.

As Kingfish said, use a cup style with an extension.

Make sure you buy a quality metal tool, however, as the plastic ones will not grip correctly. It's not a bad idea to check the fit of the tool on the filter you plan to use, too. I think mine came from NAPA or Car Quest, but I don't recall for sure.

That's what it took to remove my original filter. No problems using cup type of tool since. I have some of the other style wrenches, but for the 5.4 situation, the cup style seems to work best.

The easiest way to do the first oil change is to have someone else do it, and when they do, make sure that they oil the gasket correctly. This is what I have done to avoid the headache of trying to get that first filter from the factory off.

Just replace your intake and fan with an AF1 and e-fans...lotsa room to get to that filter..
