Noises from the Engine

Anyone have, or have had, either of these issues? And if so, or if not, do you know what it is?

1. Periodically when starting the engine right after the engine starts a loud rattle sound will happen for about 2 or 3 seconds.

2. When accelerating the vehicle (more noticable around 50mph) a high pitch sound coming from the engine area. It gets louder when you push the accelerator, and then quiets down when you let off.

Took it to the dealer and NATURALLY they don't hear much! I guess they think I love wasting my time with them.

Thanks

What engine...........? If it's a 5.4l 3v engine, you may hear the cam phasers.
Are you using Motorcraft oil & filter ? The anti-drainback valve in the MC oil filter eliminates "dry" starts.

Did you leave the cup holder that you stole from the Ford dealer in there when you were changing the oil?

Maybe he should just take a new truck home for a 'overnight test drive' and do a engine swap while he is at it.

Engine Noise

Yep I have had this happen too on start up. Not yey one acceleration. I havent dared taken it to Ford since they will either not hear it of want to rebuild the whole truck on my dime! I will be checking back on this one!

Just because I'm such a nice guy, I'll help out my not so honest friend. What oil filter are you using? I was using Fram in my 2004 and got this noise at start up. Switched to the Motorcraft and BINGO! Fram's anti-drainback valves arn't up to par.

That's a good question about the oil filter. For the first time since owning the truck I took it to a non-Ford place. I will have to check to see what they put on. Chances are it wasn't Motorcraft.

Oh and needless to say they stuck me for $45 to find absolutely nothing wrong and perform a "diagnostics check." They wanted $90 to pull out the starter and check something on it. That was just to pull it out. Not fix it!

I also had a rattle at startup but I found out it was an exhaust shield that was vibrating, I bent it up some and it has never done it since

I have the cold startup noise too... Take a look at this post that I started... The noise seems to be affected by what grade of oil you use.
