Injector Cleaners....

Got two questions...

1. Should I add a fuel system cleaner to my truck every 5k? Something along the lines of STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner... Along with a bottle of fuel injector cleaner?

2. When should I add some of that dry gas into the tank?

Right now my truck is running fine... but I just want to make sure it stays running well. Currently I am getting 20 mpg with a total weight of aprox. 5500 lbs.

I've always been [strongly] advised against adding any type of fuel additive cleaner for the injection system.

I've also heard - first hand - of warranty's being void because of this.

Thumbs down from me.

X2, in my opinion it's all snake oil. There's no way putting 1 or 2 bottles of cleaner into 20 or 30 gallons of fuel will do anything. The only way to properly clean the injectors is to use a good grade of fuel and have them professionally cleaned as part of regular maintenance. When the dealer/shop of choice cleans them they run the engine on just the cleaner. This removes the deposits almost completely. Something no fuel additive will ever do.

1. No.

2. No.

Fuels nowadays have all the cleaners in them you need. If/when you ever do need the injectors cleaned, it takes something a lot more aggressive than any cures in a can that's dumped in the tank.

Just replace your fuel filter every 30K miles or so, and you'll be fine as frog's hair.

Also, I was talking to a guy that works on engines... he told me that Kerosene will effectively clean out an engine. Is this true?

What I was thinking of doing was running about 5 or 6 bottles of that stuff at less than a 1/8 of a tank... when the low fuel light is on. That would be a huge concentration.

Kerosene is a solvent similar to gasoline and will cut through grease and sludge. I don't advocate running it in your engine or in your fuel system though.

Gasolines have all the cleaners you really need nowadays. Just replace your fuel filter every 30K miles or so and don't buy fuel from shady outfits out of 55 gallon drums in someone's barn, and you'll be fine. No injector cleaners or any of that junk needed.

But, if/when you really do need your injectors and fuel system in general cleaned, I'd recommend a Motorvac service. This uses pressurized cleaner that's almost like a soapy water to run the engine and blow all the crap out of the injectors and combustion chambers. It's the only fuel system service I believe in, the only one I've ever seen really drastic before and after results with.

I use Techron fuel system/injector cleaner after every oil change. This is the same stuff, albeit not as agressive as the Techron formulation in gas.

Thanks for all your input. I used it in my previous vehicle, and it made a slight improvement, especially in gas mileage. I threw a new gas filter, did an oil change, cleaned the k&n, and some other minor work, and I got a 3 mpg addition along with using a fuel injector cleaner after doing this.
