Not driving enough...
Not driving enough...
Ok, here's the story...
I will need an oil change next week (next monday) because it has been 3 months... but I won't be able to get one until the week after because I don't have time.
I am not even close to the mileage needed for an oil change... I'm 1,500 miles away from needing one. But it's been 3 months.
I know it probably won't hurt the engine... but what about Ford and the warranty?

What kind of oil does the V6 use?
I'm under the impression that both the 4.6L and 5.4L use a blend from the factory and really should be good to 5,000 miles. I know our Mini Cooper S's recomended oil change interval is 10,000 miles with a full synthetic.

I can change my own oil and filter in like 10 minutes. I can even change it directly after driving it with it being hot.
I'd change my own oil... but not till the warranty ends... just so they can't point fingers at me for doing something wrong.

If your capable of it, I'd do it yourself. Get some Mobil1 Full Synthetic and a Motorcraft filter. Mobil1 just came out with that 15,000 mile/1 year synthetic that you could run if you don't put on too many miles.
Save your reciepts for the oil and filter. There is no reason your dealer should ever give you any trouble, I don't think any vehicle my family has ever owned has had it's oil changed by anyone but us and we've had some problems with a few engines and they never said anything about it.

They can't do jack about you changing your oil yourself. You're allowed to.
Anyway, you do realize that Ford recommends that you change the oil every 5 months or 5,000 miles, not every 3 and 3,000, right?
I have 3k on my truck and will be bringing it in when I hit 5...I got free oil changes, otherwise, I'd change it myself...but $30 is $30 and if it's free, it's worth 30 minutes of my time on an off day.

Because I work from home now for the last 18 months or so, I maybe drive 400-500 miles a month in my F150 (just crossed 10000 miles and I bought the truck in Aug '05). Last time I was at the dealer for an oil change, I asked the guys how often I should get the oil changed as it'll take me months and months to get to 3000-5000 miles in between changes. They just told me to get it done at least every 6 months, and I'd be fine.
Well, I got a complimentary free oil change in my truck.
Sure they changed my oil... (if that) but they didn't change the filter. Should've checked it before I took the truck.
From now on I do all the oil changes. Screw the dealers!
I changed the oil right after driving it to my local auto parts store. Popped the hood, popped the cap, drained the oil, removed old filter, poured a quart to clean, waited 5, attached new filter, plugged it, filled it. 15 minutes later, one happy person.
Most people wait 20+ minutes for the oil to cool. I just do it with long, thick leather gloves. Never had a problem.
