Sway Bars

Sway Bars

What are your guys oppinions on taking them off? Reading on titantalk all the offroad guys there take them off. I took mine off and went around the block and becides a little more body roll it seems fine. I hit this big wash and it deffently made the front more smooth. So what do you guys think?

They do it for offroading because it allows more flex so it's fine if you're at low speeds but you'll notice they're unhooked when you drive on the highway. What are you trying to do with your truck?

I took mine off for drag racing, but put it back on for the winter. It helps the front come up more for better weight transfer.

I can't really tell a whole lot of difference on the road. I do have low profile tires and a lowered truck though , so I'm sure that helps the body roll some.

I was just reading and the guys there said how much better it handles everyday bumps with out the sway bar, and I though I would try it being I have the coilovers like they do.

I drove home today with the bar off and there is a little more body roll but the ride over bumps is so much better. I would love to keep it like this but I am worried about doing a quick turn because I dont know what to expect. How can I keep this ride but still be safe, or am I trying to get the cake and eat it too.
The titan guys moved up to a little stiffer spring I was thinking of doing that, what do you guys think.

that is pure drivel...your handling goes down without the sway bar...the sway bar affects body roll from side to side. the IFS in the front handles the road bumps...for a street truck, this verges on the unsafe to remove sway bars. these trucks sit pretty high and without that anti-sway, you're chances of accident go up

for a better ride quality, you need to upgrade to a better coil-over (front) and shocks (rear) or get a car...sorry.

Yes it is true that handling goes down but these aren't race trucks. I'm not saying that you won't feel a difference but it won't be so bad that I would call it unsafe.

Well the ride will improve becasuse the tires are allowed to travel up and down more easily because the sway bar is not prohibiting the travel. But, I think if you went and put stiffer springs in there it would kinda defeat the whole purpose and give you a rougher ride because of the stiffer springs. But that is just how I see it.

I have both and am lifted. I think I might try the stiffer spring but IDK, there is a difference in how it takes bumps without it, for the better. Changing springs doesnt sound all that easy though so IDK I might go and try a quick emergency turn tomorrow and go from there.

The stiffer spring thing is just off Titantalk that what they did to help control body roll. Those guys over there are also full on jumping their trucks so stiffer springs are better for them. One regular lifted driver said he took his off with the stiffer spring and loves it still.

Ya it will defintly feel different. If you keep it off it will just be something that you have to get used to. I have a toyota 4runner rockcrawler that is on really soft springs with no sway bar and when driven on the road you just have to be cautious and know the limits of the vehicle. I know that your truck with no sway bar will be no where near that bad.

Ya I understand that it would help control body roll but to get the body roll down enough they would have to be pretty stiff and would make the ride bouncy. Kinda like how cars with no body roll feel every little bump in the road cause they are so stiff. But im no spring expert so I could be wrong.

I've got one of those cars...my Mustang has been lowered and has stiffer springs for handling...it beats the crap out of me...enough that my truck feels like I'm riding on a cloud.

IMO though, you should only disconnect your sway bars when wheeling...you need that extra firmness in body rolls to help with maneaverability. your % for an accident go up without the sway bar.

in my personal opinion, i think its a bit foolish to remove the swaybar on a daily driver. especeially on a lifted truck. after watching how bad my truck (lowered with stiffer springs and shocks) handles on the track even with the front sway bar, i decided to order a rear swaybar from belltech also. i know the weight will slow down my track times, but im trying to build a well rounded truck...

i know you guys arent going to be taking your lifted rigs on the track, but you also have to consider conditions you might encounter in everyday driving. just the other day, i saw a 1/2 ton van swerve to miss some road debris, and because of the height of the van and high body roll factor, it came a heartbeat away from flipping...

if you are going to keep your truck a garage queen, and only take it out to go to the track or go off roading, i say leave it off. otherwise i think its an unecessary risk...
