Extended oil change interval

We'll guys since Ford decided to start recommending 7500 mile oil change intervals i thought I would get my used oil tested. I had it tested through Blackstone Labs.

Oil type: Motorcraft Syn bend 5w20
Filter type: Purlator Pure 1
Engine: 2005 5.4L 3V
Milage on oil: 3,783 miles

Driving type/style
I would estimate that about 750 or less miles of the 3700 were highway miles.
The rest was largely to and from work about 13 miles each way. These miles consisted of back roads with several stop signs and stop lights along the way.
My driving style is far from aggresive. Most often I accelerate with the rpms under 2500.

The engine wear was within normal range. The TBN reading was only at 2.2 were at 1 is too low. Blackstone recommended that I should keep the oil changed intervals at around 3700 miles. This is a far cry from Ford's 5,000 or 7,500 mile interval

So anyone that is changing the oil at 5000miles or more and drive mostly in the in town miles I would start changing it sooner. Or at least send a sample off to have it tested. Unless you are running a full synthetic(which by the way apparently Moblie 1 is not a full synthetic anymore ) If running a full syn then I would still want to have my oil tested to make sure it is still good.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll try to post the actual report later.

And before anyone asks about the mobile 1 info not being full syn. I do not have the info to back it up. I believe I have read a post on this site before discussing it and I there has been a few on ls1tech.com. It should also be discussed on bobistheoilguy.com as well. I did not save any of the pages for easy reference.

I think it really depends on the type of driving that you do. If you do a lot of stop and go driving (like I do), changing the oil every 3000-3500 is probably best. If you do more highway driving, then you might be able to get away with changing every 5000 or 7500 miles like Ford is recommending.

Thumbs up Good Info

I read about the extended oil change intervals but I had no intentions of extending mine. 3000 mile oil changes have worked for me for the last 27 years and I'm too old and stubburn to change my habits now.

FWIW, my 06 F150 only has 11k miles and so far I haven't gone beyond 2500 miles between oil changes.

true. I've been doing the 3000 mile changes since new. the oil coming out is not clean enough to justify going past 3,000 to that 5,000 or 7,500 mile mark. just asking for lowered engine life with all that crap getting forced into every nook and cranny of the engine

I'll stick with the 3000 mile change. I always change my oil and get the tires rotated at 3000 miles.

I've been using Blackstone labs to test all my vehicles, Truck, boat, and motorcycle. It's a good way to gauge your oil change intervals as well as cleaning the air filters (K&N Type). In the long run it can help with resale. Showing a potential buyer that that the engine has no internal issues can be a plus.

I'm sticking with 3k changes.

Of course they are going to reccomend longer oil change intervals, they want to sell us new trucks you know!

I run the Syntec, and am about to switch to Royal Purple. I typically go about 3500 miles between changes / rotations. I do a lot of stop / go / off road / towing / hot / dusty conditions. SO yeah, I am going to run a synthectic, and I am going to change it fairly often.

Now that I have my Saturn back for going back and forth to work, the milage, and the types of milage on the truck are changing dramatically.

Off road, hauling, towing, hot, dusty conditions yes, but WAY less stop and go stuff.

I haven't filled her up in two weeks now! And still have half a tank!
