Question Why are FX4 18" tires so expensive?

I dont understand this. I want to get 285/65-18 BFG A/T tires for my truck and they are about 240-250 each. But here is what i dont understand: a 33-11.5/15" tire is about the same equivelant size, and go for about $150 each. Why is a tire with more rubber 100$ cheaper? It doesn't make since that a 18" diameter tire is 100$ more w/less rubber. Can someone explain please???

it takes more engineering and stronger materials to make less rubber and therefore less air volume support more weight

Also, most (if not all) of the 15" BFG A/T's are load range C... The 18" that you're looking at is a load range E, which means it's much more heavy duty than the 15".

Here's one that blows that theory out of the water. My 05 FX4 had 275-65/18 goodyears from the factory, replacement cost $180 each. My 07 FX4 has 275-55/20 pirellis, cost $114 each. So the idea that a shorter sidewall costs more does not apply in this application.

I'm having the same problem. Trying to get some taller tires for my 17" wheels. Going to cost me a 100 more per tire than the same tire on a 16" wheel and they are both the same load range.

It has to do with the volume of tires made/needed. The 18" tire is still relitivly new to the trucks. In a couple of years there will be enough on the road for the volume and competition from other tire manufacturers to lower the prices.

It blew my mind the 20" Pirelli Scorpions on my '07 FX4 only cost $100. Not to mention they're the highest rated tire on Tirerack.

I prefer the look of the 18" FX4 wheels over the 20's, but It'll cost about $600 less to replace all four tires.
