Intake question!!

Just took my 04 Screw in because the check engine light has come on and was told that the intake (air raid) that I installed has burned out both the front and rear O2 Sensors...anyone else had this problem? The dealer has advised me to put the OEM air intake back on....HELP!!

Thats weird the AirAid is actually one of the intakes for our trucks that doesn't throw any codes, or run lean with. I think your dealership is full of it, there just pointing fingers at what ever they can. I have an AirAid and have never had one problem with it. And i've had it for about a year and a half.

B.S. a lean motor will throw a CEL because the O2's are sensing it. if both O2's go bad at the same time, it's more likely you bought bad gas or something electrical.

your CAI didn't burn them out. the dealership is just trying to avoid doing warranty work or cannot explain why they all died at the same time.

Many 04's have been proven to run lean right from the factory. Mine was one of them. You could always reinstall the stock intake and have the truck data-logged to see if yours is running lean, which I am willing to bet it is.
(I went through all of this when I was assisting Troyer with the R&D'ing of the Air Force1)
The comment from the dealer in that the intake "burned out the 02 sensors" shows their stupidity...Find another dealer...

Tylus, your statement that he would have tripped a CEL is not ture. I had numerous events during the R&D'ing I spoke of where my truck was running right at 16/1 lean and NEVER tripped a CEL. (Got several "wrenches", limp mode, but no CEL's.) There were some pretty nasty issues especially with the early 04's....

16:1 from the factory??? Wow......that's crazy. I had an airaid back in the day and it was problem free from day 1. Oh yeah, O2 sensors don't really "burn out" unless they get some silicon on them or they get REALLY hot. Hell, I melted my right side cat when my injector hung open on cylinder 3 and the left bank ran at about 17:1 and now I have a hole in piston #5.....were talkin some serious heat there, and the O2 sensors never had to be replaced.

I stand corrected. My understanding was that the PCM was to throw that CEL when you ran extremely lean and to put the truck in Limp Mode. but yeah, the O2 burning out from a CAI is still crap

Thanks guys. I haven't noticed that the truck runs any different than when I first installed it. I've researched the heck out of the 02 sensors and if they were truly burned out i'd have some major problems...

Ask your dealer to prove to you that your CAI was responsible for your burned out front and rear O2 sensors. They will not be able to because it's horse dung!

Hold your ground and demand a warranty replacement.

Good luck.

Intake Question

Call or e-mail Airaid and talk to their techs. I researched the the change to their products with concern to if changing to their filter and intake would damage specifically the MAF sensor. They were very nice and stated all of their products have been tested and found not to cause any problems with OEM equipment. In fact, the guy told me there is a Federal Emissions Law that would require the Dealer to fix emissions problems instead of pawning off the repair as customer induced. I have Airaid on my Triton 5.4 05 SCAB with no problems.
Sound like another Blue Oval Dealer 5 Star Service bullshi.....t.

Good Luck

Hi Tylus,
I am not trying to hijack this thread but I see you're on a Trident boat. My son works for EB in Groton building new boats and travels to VA for retrofits on the boomers.

My company builds equipment for your boat, the new Seawolf and Virginia class. Our CEO is retired R.Adm. Dave Oliver a former Sub Fleet commander. He has some pretty salty sea stories and is quite a plain spoken down to earth person.

Anyway I am a former Sonarman and in many ways I am still involved with subs in the civilian world. I just want to say hi to a fellow person in the silent service even though you're in a boomer.

Later,
