Post How To Remove Rear View Mirror Mirrors

HOW TO REMOVE REAR VIEW MIRROR MIRRORS

First off, removing ANY wedge fit mirror has a risk of glass breakage and "I" don't recommend removing them unless YOU are prepaired to BUY a windshield.

I'm a Master Glass Installer with over 23 Years in the trade and I can break a windshield removing these mirrors, so now YOU know where YOU stand REMOVING one......

Some guys just pull them off the windshield.. WRONG...
Some use a screwdriver to pry between the mirror and the glass....WRONG...
Some say heat the glass and pull off....WRONG

Ford has three types of mirrors on late models,

SLOTS ON THE SIDES.
The correct way is to remove the attactments from the mirror, then on the side is a small slot... use a 1/4 blade screwdriver in the slot between the glass and the SPRING CLIP.... not the mirror outer shell.....then twist the driver..removing this mirror ALLWAYS has a risk of cracking the shield..

on the side slotted mirrors if you spring the rivets, you can sometimes rebrad them the tighten the clip, if not you will have to replace the mirror....

SLOT ON THE CENTER BOTTOM,
use a 3/16 screwdriver in the slot and lift the driver away from the shield...
low risk of cracking on these, but I've seen it happen...

on the center slot, if spring, replace mirror...

SLOT ON BOTTOM, NOT IN CENTER, BUT ON LEFT OR RIGHT OF CENTER,
these have a inside spring steel lock clip, use a very small and thin flat head 1/8 screwdriver in slot and push between mirror shoe and spring steel clip, then slide mirror and tool both off shoe at the same time....

if you spring the lock clip bend it out a little, it will break off if you bend to far....

As always, if you BREAK your windshield, Don't send me emails, YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD THE RISK......

Rockpick, Lock this post if you would...

One quick question that would help eveyone on this forum. Since you posed this to the 2004-2006 F-150 forum and since you also own a 2005 F-150 which type mirror do we have?
Most 2004 and up F150's with compass have, mine included..and THIS IS THE ONE THAT WILL BREAK A SHIELD IN A HEART BEAT....

I was'nt trying to turn this into a thread, but I see two or three people trying to get these mirrors off a week and it they're playing with fire...fire being that gut feeling that you get when you just broke a $300.00 shield...so I wrote this up a while back and posted it, and reposting it again today, I just want people to know how and the RISK...

Okay, time for a war story.

I got called to the service lane at the dealer I work for once upon a time. A customer with a Mark VIII had bought a new electrochromatic mirror to replace the one that was currently in the car; the liquid solution in it had leaked, turning the mirror pitch black.

I'm a hot shot, I think to myself, no problem, nothing to it, I've done this a zillion times before. I grab hold of the mirror, twist, wiggle, pull, it won't budge. WTF? The customer's watching me struggle with this thing, I stick my pocket screwdriver in the little slot and try prying on the release clip, no dice. I'm talking to the customer, joking around, "Wow, I've never had one this hard to remove," so on a whim I grab hold of the mirror and pull straight back...

...pulling a nice 4" by 4" section of the windshield out with it.
