So even though you might get a 6 speed auto... how refined is it going to be?
Totally true
a 6 speed to get better mpg...it will be nice, but I don't think we'll see an earthshaking difference. probly about 1-2 mpg on average.
what that 6 speed will do is improve the over-all driveability of the truck. instead of 3 power fwd gears, you will now have 5 power fwd gears. the final output ratio for 6th will be roughly the same as our current 4th gear is, maybe a little lower.
those 5 gears will allow for deeper gearing and let us better utilize the power of the 4.6/5.4/6.2 I can foresee alot of fun. also, we might see the tow ratings go up. ~10,000 lbs for a 1/2 ton is alot already though.

Why can't Ford put out some #'s and a firm production date.

It is going to be a modular motor design still just with larger bore spacing, hence a completely new block. The reason being with the current bore spacing the bores cannot be made much larger safely and we all know there is no replacement for displacement! This is also why there are rumors of a much larger (around 7 liters) variant of this new motor in special addition form most likely but hey its just rumors. Finally a production mod motor with more than 330ci (besides the V10).

The new Expy 6-speed has 2 OD's; (0.86:1 & 0.69:1). and a first gear of 4.17:1(!). Nothing new here. With that tranny alone, a 3.73:1 rear gear, and the existing 300HP 5.4 3V, it allows the Expy to more than hold it's own against a 4-speed equipped new 6.0 L Chebbie - both in accel and especially in towing. With the BOSS - it wil be stunning.
They're just ratios... and allows the use of a 4:10 or better rear end.
Best of both worlds, nice tq multiplication in the lower gears & low rpms at cruise.
