Oh Snap...my paint is falling off (2007)

Oh man this isn't good...my truck is like 3, maybe 4 weeks old...

So I'm waxing my truck today and right behind the supercab door on the back part, by the rear window, I notice like a big clump of paint. It's not a clump of clearcoat, but a clump of blue paint. I'm like WTF

So I give it a little feel with my finger and it falls off exposing plain metal underneath. I'm jacked at this point (See photo 1)

Then, I make my way around to the tailgate and notice on the lower right side of the tailgate, there is a big drip of clearcoat...So now I'm really jacked (see photo 2).

The dealership is closed of course because it's Friday and I'm not sure I feel like letting them sand down my paint and have it painted at their body shop...but at the same time I'm not sure that a little bit of touch up paint (on location 1 [see photo 1] will stick well enough to keep everything out).

Anyone have experience with things like this -- do you think the touch up paint is the best route to take...I'm scare to let them paint it because I always hear that in 5 years that paint will look different than the factory paint. What should I do?

Photo 1 (passenger side by rear window):

Photo 2 (right rear, lower part of tailgate):

The whole truck isn't like that. Just the lower part of the tailgate (for protection I guess?) and that back part around the rear window. The rest of it is like a mirror.

That blows. When I bought my Screw in Feb there was a three inch scratch on the front hood that went from the metal of the hood onto the plastic match painted grille. The body shop said that they would have to repaint the whole hood so I opted to have the dealership pay to have a pro detailer come to where I work and try to do some magic. He did a good job but you can still see the scratch. Anyway, to make a long story longer, the detail guy said avoid doing anything that is going to remove the factory paint because unless you want to spend a fortune the average re-paint is never going to be as good as the factory. However, in your case I would be very suspicious of that factory paint on your truck. It's almost like the body didn't get prepped correctly or maybe contamination in the paint. I found some very small paint build up in one or two spots when I waxed my truck no bigger than the tip of a pen but they did not chip off when I picked at them.

Does anyone know if there is a way to reliably test the integrity of the paint? I mean it already looks like there is something wrong.

I feel for you, new truck and all.

I was gonna say... is that paint or powder coating? What's with the orange peel texture?!?

I have that texture on mine but it is on the bottom of the truck along the sides where my runner boards are. I figured it was added protection for the paint since it looks deliberately done but I don't think I have it on the back by the window or on the tailgate anywhere. When I go home tonight I'll check it out.

Honestly, the paint doesn't look like that to the naked eye...just when I took the picture for some reason. I dunno.

Anyway, thanks Big Krackers, for some sympathy...I just bought this thing like 3 or 4 weeks ago heh...I almost feel like trading it in...I hear you on the whole don't repaint it thing, that's what I'm worried about. I think some touch up should do then I'll just keep my eye on it.

Top left is the under side texture I was talking about. Top right is the back of my cab and the bottom pic is the bottom of my tailgate.

Looking at my truck up close I have the same orange peel look when viewed at certain angles. If a good light source is hitting the paint it looks like a mirror but in bad light the peel effect is noticeable. I take it from some of the posts in this thread the the "orange peel" look is a characteristic of Fords? This is my first Ford anything so I am not as familiar with all the little added features of Fords yet.

Deapee, I guess I'd go with your instincts and just touch it up and keep an eye on it unless someone more knowledgeable tells you otherwise. Good luck man.

All of the new body I've seen so far look like they have orange peel.. mine included.

I've lost two chunks of paint about half the size of a dime on either side at the front lower bed corner. I showed them to the dealership for future reference in case it continues but I just touched them up myself. They were not caused by gravel roads and they are above the rear of my nerf bars, where it is somewhat protected from rock chips anyway.

My truck is two tone and I have a spot of silver overspray under the clear coat a little bigger than the size of a bb below my right tail light as well.

I don't know what they've done to their paint process for these but they need to revisit it.

Yeah...I can agree with that. I mean I'm not trying to sound like I think I purchased something expensive and be one of those guys, but I mean when it comes down to it, I did spend a good bit of money on this truck.

Is this something common? I mean could this happen on one of those Ford GT 500's or a Dodge Viper...or do companies not do quality control for anything under 50 grand?

I had a spot on my Ranger, but it was inside my passenger side door jamb...touched it up and moved on.

Bummer, I would go with the touch up paint. The dealer will damage more trying to fix it. There is no paint whatsoever on the rocker panel underneath my super-cab doors like a foot long, just white primer! F#$%%^G ROBOTS & Quality Control!!!
