Found an 02 screw FX4, 5.4, 30k miles asking $18500. Also found an 05 screw FX4 5.4, 76k miles asking $20000. Both well cared for. I am really looking for advice from people who have owned both. I like both styles equally. I am looking for the roomiest cab front and back, best mpg, best ride, and reliability. How about some differences and advice. I drive about 12k/year. Thanks

I've owned both... the '05 is leaps and bounds better than the old generation. This truck is the quietest I've driven, feels so solid compared to the '01 I had, has an amazing interior (esp the black leather)...I could go on forever.
Bottom line though...I think 20k is a little too much for the 05 with 76k. If they both had 30k miles and even if the '05 was a few $k more, it would still be hands down in favor of the new generation.

I have to agree and say go with the 05. I had an 03 and now an 06 and the changes are leaps and bounds, IMO.
Just get the seller to come off some greenbacks.......
Good Luck!

. The only issue I've had with my 02 is a wheel bearing, I would say they are very dependable. One thing the 02 has over the 05 is big storage areas behind the back seat. Both cabs are similar sized, although my 02 seems to have more head room and more front space due to no console. $18500 seems kinda high, but only 30k miles it should be like new. I would try and get them down to 17-17.5 I think it would be a good purchase. For me, I'm not paying 20k for anything with 76k miles on it...if you are sold on the newer body style, I would try and find one with lower miles (of course it will be higher $$$). Good luck.

Both are very nice trucks, you wont be dissapointed in eather. However the older 5.4 have a huge problem with blowing plugs out, so I would have the heads checked to make sure there is no play in the plugs and that they are all tight.
Now the newer truck will have more power and get better milage if the trucks are similarly equiped, plus the new one rides better and drives better.
If it was me I would talk with the guy that has the 05 and talk him down a little and buy that one.

Very good points.......Now that you mention it, I do wish the new model had the rear storage. Originally Posted by firstimeFord

Care to elaborate? Just the 05, or all 04-07 3Vs? Just curious, as I have off-and-on been looking to upgrade from my 02 to an 07...but just can't seem to be impressed enough to pull the trigger (especially since mine is paid for).Originally Posted by Quintin
I'd buy the '02, just because I don't like 2005 5.4 3Vs.

'05+ 5.4 3Vs have questionable injectors. Some tend to stick open, causing all kinds of nasty things like burnt up catalytic converters and/or bent connecting rods.Originally Posted by firstimeFord

This is my reason for buying the newer bodystyle. I value my safety. Same accident test. Two generations of F150

[/IMG]The 02 has storage behind the rear seat, doesn't the 05 have a little storage under the rear seat? The 02 cab seems a little roomier, that's good. I guess now my main concern is the engine. Don't want flying plugs. The 02 is a 2V, less MPG than the 05. What about a lower mile 04 compared to a higher mile 05? Apples to apples? Thanks for the advice.

The 04's had several tsb's and things that the 05 and up dont have. But if you can find a good 04 then go for it they are great trucks.
Silvercab 5.5 very good point I had forgotten the older trucks did so poorly in the crash test.
Quintin Im not saying your not telling the truth, but from what I have read the injector problem has only happened on a very limited number of trucks. If im wrong please let me know.

A lot of TSBs that apply to 2004 model year trucks apply to 2005 and newer trucks too. Besides, number of TSBs doesn't really mean much anyways.Originally Posted by birddog_61

"Very limited" is still more than I'd like to see. I've seen stuck injectors in a lot of 2005s and a few '06s. The '07s haven't been out very long, no telling about those yet.Originally Posted by birddog_61

that seems like too much money for the 05. I'm wanting to sell my 04 fx4 supercab with 59000 miles for 15k. and thats in excellent condition
