Fuel Gauge Problem
I have a 04 scab and I had between 1/4 and 1/2 tank so I stopped to give my money to big oil. I got back in and my gauge isnt showing that its full. I turned the truck off while pumping. It is only showing exaclty the same amount that I had in it b/f I filled up. This is the first time that it has done this. Do you guys know of anything that would cause this?? I picked up my truck from the dealer on Monday b/c of a bad tranny. WTF, is my truck falling apart??? Help!?!?!!
if you have the key in any "on" position your gauge wont reflect the true amount immediately...i dont know why. drive around for a bit and watch the needle move towards F, or let it sit for a few hours, it will read correctly-
As I understand the guage reports an average reading over a period of time as reported by the fuel sensor. If you leave the key on while filling it will take longer for that average to creep up. There's logic in the programming which causes an instantaneous update when the key is off and a specific minimum change in the tank sensor is reported.
Had this happen to me once about a year ago. It corrected itself in a short period (30min) and has not happened since. Cant recall if i had the key in the on position, I usually take my keys with me. But I recall that my g/f was in the truck and she may have switched it on to listen to the radio.

Happend to me on Monday morning on my way to work. My FX2 is the Scab and i was almost completely empty so i stopped and filled up. Im positive i removed the key from the ignition, but when i got back in my truck even my information center said "LOW FUEL". By the time i got to work the guage only reached 1/2 tank and on my way home it went to full. My mom used to have a 99 expedition and my brother once had a 00 F150 so im used to it, nevertheless it's never happend like this before though.
It has something to do with the "slosh" sensor in the tank. If you let the tank get to low it will happen upon fill up. By adding fuel to a low tank of gas will cause the slosh sensor to go nuts (like gas sloshing in the tank) and show low fuel. When you drive around for a 1/2 hour to an hour it will correct itself to the amount of gas in the tank

When I dropped my truck off a couple weeks ago at the dealer to have the new tranny put it it was low on fuel, and when I picked it up it was reallllly low on fuel so I drove right across the street and filled up. When I got back in the truck the gauge was at F. I drove around for 2 days and I stopped to put fuel in it today b/c it was at 1/3 tank. This is when it happened. I took the keys out of the ignition so that isnt it. I waited for about 3 hours and went out to the truck and started it and it still reads 1/3 tank. I got mad and disconnected the bat and checked the gauge after that and it was reading F. Maybe just an electronic hickup??
