Question Should I Bother with the Warranty?

Hey guys,

Just bought my 05 F150 FX4 yesterday. It's got 34,6xx miles on it right now and as you know, the warranty expires at 36,000. I'm not sure if I can afford the extended warranty right now (need to check on cost) but is it worth my trip to a local dealership to have the warranty transferred for the next 1500 miles?

Any insight is appreciated!

i did the same thing and had about 31,000 miles on the truck went to dealer thinking maybe 1,000 for 75,00 or 100,000 warranty but when i got there i think i was getting ripped off they told me 2,200 plus tax others on here got it for 1,000 or so. so i think it depends on the dealer and if there a rip off or not. doesnt hurt to check it out and ask. I'm gonna try another dealer.

honestly i wouldnt if your truck is running fine and never had any major problems with it, now if you believe that it might break down anytime soon then you might just wanna think about those warranties but dont buy them from the dealer they are over priced and offer less things covered by their warranty.

Factory warranty automatically transfers to new owner. There is no need to go to the dealer to transfer it to you. If you want to extend the warranty check around your local dealers, call and ask for the finance department. You should be able to get it for around $1,000 to $1,500 depending on how long you go. Stick with Ford warranties. But you usually need to do it before the original warranty expires.

The warranty price is highly negotiable. If you do decide to get it, make sure that you get the bumper to bumper. The dealerships like to offer this first. When you balk at the price, they offer you the lesser coverage warranty at a lesser (probably more inflated) price. Stuff like the IAC and things are not covered unless you have the bumper to bumper. The plans are pretty straight forward as to what is covered, but the way the dealerships offer them is not.

I also know that some insurance companies offer bumper to bumper warranties. Gieco was one of these companies and I heard that State Farm or Allstate may do the same. Not sure if these type of policies still exist, but might be worth checking. Also there are 3rd party companies that offer extended warranties similar to a ford one, but not a ford branded one.

Last time I bought one it was about $1500. I wont buy one again. I have never gotten my monies worth. Either I sold the car or never had a covered problem with it.

I'm at 28k and have been considering. There is also just a power train as well as this 84 component option ( the one I will go for ) because it also covers the injectors, where the powertrain one does not.

This is the quote I got from a local dealer yesterday

4yr or 75,000mi 5 yr or 100,000mi
PREMIUM CARE $1545.00 $2340.00
EXTRA CARE $1215.00 $1835.00
BASE CARE $1125.00 $1275.00

Basically the base care covers Air Conditioning, powertrain and most suspension components.

I think I am gonna get the base care 100k mile plan I am at 35,5xx right now. I think the extra care package is a ripoff, when you go line by line and see what additional items are covered by the extracare, it is not much at all, definetly not worth the almost $600 price difference. The premium care is pretty much everything bumper to bumper except brake pads.

If you plan on putting alot of milage and/or drive the truck hard I would get the warranty. I was at 34000 already on my 05 and added the 5year100000 warranty and already have 48000 on it. I travel all over and if I breakdown out of state I don't have to worry about a dealer ripping me off. Remember there would be no service departments if vehicles never broke.

Financially, the extended warranty isn't an option right now. Glad I don't have to travel to the local dealership to get the warranty transferred. Thanks for the information and opinions folks!

The warranty stays with the truck, doesn't matter who owns it. No needs to go to the dealership and transfer it. Since you only have a few more miles on the warranty, I would look the truck over with a fine toothed comb and get every little bitty thing repaired ASAP.

Unless the truck you bought has been road HARD, it wouldn't bother with an extended warranty. I'm on my 7th F-150, and I never had a post-factory-warranty repair that amounted to more than a few hundred dollars. If you did have the $1000+ for an extended warranty, you'd be better off putting it into a money market account. If you need a repair, the money will be there. If you don't need a repair, the you still have your money and some interest to boot. At the end of an extended warranty, you don't have squat to show for it.

I say take the risk and go without it its a FORD so you shouldn't have any major problems out of it. Plus what you pay for the extra warranty would cover most repairs except for a engine or trany and if either of them went it would be better to just trade the thing off.

I went through the webpage, how do they verify that you are not over mileage? I am VERY close and want to get one, but I do not want to wait, and then end up missing out
