Factory Subwoofer Installation?

I'm going to install a Ford factory subwoofer into my buddies 2006 SuperCab XLT this weekend. Since his is a XLT it wasn't prewired for the sub. He already has an Audiophile headunit, and I took the subwoofer connector and the radio connector out of a 2006 Lariat that didn't have the sub. I couldn't get all the wire out so I have to create my own harness. I'm going to wire the power into fuse 38 in the fuse box. Now the factory subwoofer speaker wires had shielding foil on them and were twisted with a "drain" wire. Should I just use normal 22 gauge wire, speaker wire, or do I need shielded wire. Also, what about the "drain" wire? Thanks for your help

It would only be to reduce interference. I am certain they did it for some reason. If its preamped signal wire, just use some sheilded cat 5 or phne wire. You should ground min one end to the chassis for the sheilding to do its job.

The only insight I would have is that the factory sub sucks. You should talk your buddy into something else.

At minimum, I'd do a Q-Logic box and an amp of your choice.

As for wiring, go big, and go shielded if you can. I wouldn't do less than 18.

I don't know if it's an option, but I put an amp under my center front seat, and set a removable downfire box with a 12" Rock Fos up front. If I need to seat six, it just unplugs and comes out.

1969Mach, thanks for the suggestion. We already got the factory sub off eBay for $100, and an Audiophile headunit for the same price he sold his standard CD player for. Also, the truck is a lease which is up next year, so this is quick and easy. Next year he can sell the stuff for probably more than what he paid for it. I have the Audiophile system in my FX4 with Nav and it's decent for a factory system.

i like your setup.
the amp part is pretty cool but i dont see myself doing the same thing with the sub, id want something more discreet that people wouldnt see or steal.

Hey 1969Mach,

Where did you get the sub box? Did you build it yourself or buy it? I want to do the exact same thing you have there. Also is your amp mounted under the passenger seat, or under the jump seat?

Thanks!
